Ive had this. It can be very annoying as the clicking was inches from my ear.

I lowered the roof and applied a small amount of GT85 (teflon lubricant) to all joints. The problem didnt go away immediately - presumably the lubricant hadnt worked all the way in, but now it is OK.

Can't believe it...I was just about to post a question about the clicking. I thought that since my car is only 3 weeks old, I was wondering if it was some kind of manufacturing defect or something. Here in SF Bay Area, nights have been cold and dry...it seems that's when the clicking is most noticeable. On nice warm sunny days...I have no idea...since the top will always be down in those circumstances. Though, I do recall that one night is particularly warm, my top didn't click.

Any idea if this is a minor flaw in the design that is producing the clicking?

It's probably solvable by adding a lubricant. The question then is what lubricant to use? I was thinking of using the teflon stuff, but it's wet and stinks a little. There's graphite lube used for bicycles cause it isn't wet and doesn't attract fuzz.

What do you guys think?

I used the teflon stuff because it is all I had and you have to be careful because the stuff could go everywhere.

I half lowered the roof and stuffed paper towel behind the joints to catch overspray.

As longs as you wipe off excess it shouldnt be a problem - I could smell it a little for a couple of days after but that completely disappeared.

You know, you're right. The teflon stuff is probably the best stuff to use (also available from a bicycle shop) since it has to penetrate into the joints. I think the graphite lube is mostly for bike chains and stuff now that I think of it.

Sounds pretty good. Wet might actually be better if the lubricant needs to work its way in...

BTW, my S is only about a month old - I noticed that at least a few of us here have '02s, maybe it is a design flaw. The top has apparently been redesigned for '02 to accommodate the glass window...

Hahahaha - Is this a black/black thing??? (My S is black/black!).

My first roof didnt have any sounds at all but was a few months old when I got it. My second roof clicked but I fixed it good!

I have had the same problem with the top on my MY00. It only occurs in colder temps. I have followed the same lube procedure as Tyringe did and it does temporarily solve the problem.
