I think the OP just needed to do a little more research before jumping to conclusions about his expectations. I dont find it necessary to bash him, but good advice has been given for the most part.

Wow, why are some people giving such negative response? Did the OP hurt your feelings? Just because the S didn't meet the expectations he had.

It's true, the s2000 isn't fast in a straight line, etc. All good and true, but why would you bash somebody for thinking otherwise and then being disappointed after the first test drive?

The initial post didn't sound like he was bashing the S2000, nor was it rude or anything. Some of the replies here are...
I understand what you mean, the members of this board do get a *little* too butthurt and defensive when someone says something negative about the S2000. However, when someone is disappointed in a car (and s/he drives a FWD car with a similar motor but vastly inferior chassis) because it doesn't VTEC hard enough, well that's just

I think you'll be happier with an EVO or STi.

Different strokes.

also, the clunking on EVERY manual transmission EVERY time?
maybe sometimes but EVERY time?
The key is to understand what is happening to produce the "clunk" in order to determine whether it's a problem or not.

The same exact mechanism happens in all manual transmissions that are placed in first (or any gear for that matter) immediately after pushing in the clutch pedal while the engine is running. It is simply the gears and input shaft that are spinning at the engine idle speed very quickly matching the output speed (which is 0 rpm if the car is stopped). It just so happens that it's more noticeable in the S2000, whether it be the direct linkage, the close proximity of the transmission to the driver, the lack of sound insulation, the amount of inertia of the parts within the transmission, etc., etc.

Some don't notice it because they hold the clutch in while they are stopped.
Some don't notice it because they are slower to put it in 1st gear after pushing on the clutch pedal.
Some don't notice it because they chose to enter 2nd and THEN 1st.
Some don't notice it because they are oblivious.

Take it, leave it, or learn to work around it, but it's common (to all MTs) and not a problem.

I don't get a clunk every time I go into first but that's where buying a good condition used car kicks in.
The noticeable "clunk" is inherent to the design, and has nothing to do with condition. If you don't get a "clunk" every time (or not at all) that has more to do with the way you are putting your car into first.

That's not to say potential buyers should not be looking for a car in good condition.

That's because the s2000 is not a fast car. Especially since 4 door grocery getters can (and will) murder you at a traffic light.
