alarms are meant to slow down criminals, hopefully you will hear something or someone will notice. no alarm will garantee it from being stolen. all you can do is make it harder for them

Wow! I just realized this is a thread I started a very long time ago! The short answer is that it worked for the time I had my previous S, which was five years. Until I traded it in on my current one in 2006. But my car has been garaged, so that makes a big difference.

BTW - I agree with the poster above. It is a deterrent, but if a thief is a pro and serious about getting into your car, I would assume he knows how to disable one pretty quickly.

i've had my 2002 for three years now and i don't have an alarm in the car, i don't have seat locks, i don't have a hard top, i don't have trunk monkeys, i don't have pitbulls that sleep in the car. What i do have is a garage with 4 surveillance cameras that surveil the area around my home and one directed right at my garage door.

How do you use the car? Do you go shopping with it or just take it to work?

In my opinion, the only way an alarm is effective is if it goes off where you are nearby and you can hear it. When in public, when a car alarm goes off I assume someones alarm is malfunctioning or some loud car passed by it. If you have a back up battery and all those features, it'll help. I'm not saying alarms are worthless but I think alarms sole purpose is to notify you that something is happening. Layers of security are best and just like everyone says, they'll get it if they want it
