Matt, since you are in my back yard. What road is that on. If you don't mind me ask.

I'm glad you are ok. You can always buy another car, but you can't buy another life. You seem mature for 17year old. This has just been a bad weekend for GPW. Another Mid A guy experienced the same thing as you. Resulting in damages to his GPW. Same ice road conditions.

To all who have posted an accident here in this thread: Good to hear you are ok and sad to hear the car is done.

Drive safe on these slippery winter roads. Invest in some good winter tires. They will save your life. But who am I to say? I live in the land of no snow.

Wow that seems like a pretty serious impact! Glad you're ok.

Those look like SO2s, or atleast some sort of summer tire from the thread...

Folks please stop driving your cars with summer tires in the winter.

djohnston, you certainly have more practical experience of driving on winter roads than me and driving experience counts for a lot, but are you suggesting that the coefficient of friction between ice and a rubber is exactly the same regardless of the compound? I can't believe that.

As it happens, I think you are probably right, snow tyres probably would not have made any difference in this case, but one can never know what difference that extra tiny amount of traction could make. It seems you are suggesting that S-02 tyres are just as safe as winter tyres in winter conditions, but that's just wrong. Apologies if I'm misunderstanding your point but I think it's irresponsible to rubbish a proven piece of safety equipment.

Jeff,
On one of the pages he said it happened on Shakers Woods which is right off of the new part of Wiehle just off the FCP. On the other side Wiehle is Steward Road. Both roads are quite twisty and have low points that often get run-off and freeze in the winter. I know exactly where it happened and there is quite a crazy turn just past there. I've definitely been one to fly down those roads from time to time, but this will definitely make you think twice about doing that.

Matt I really don't think snow tires would have helped in this situation. Not unless your running studded tires are you going to see a difference on Ice. They will help and improve your traction, but with an Ice patch that size, on a twisty road such as Shakers Woods it would be hard for me to imagine that "winter tires" could have completely prevented any chance of an incident. I have a set of Dunlop Winter Sport D2's running on my S right now. I would definitely recommend you looking into that for your next S. You might even want to talk to your insurance about the possibility of buying back your stock rims & have some snow tires mounted on them for the winter. Glad your OK. Hey don't let anyone look down on you because your young, but set an example for them.
