At 19 they've been driving for 3 years. It is a rare prodigy kid that can drive as well as someone with 10+ years worth of skill.
Did you grow up with any super rich kids? I did. The type who in their mid-teens received salaries for being things like "Building Manager" for commercial and residential buildings their parents owned. I can think of one in particular who owned Saleen Mustangs, Camaros, a Hummer, boats, etc etc. All of those vehicles were involved in multiple substantial accidents with him behind the wheel. Fortunately none of them resulted in serious injury to the dozen other drivers involved in his accidents over the course of 5 years.
I feel that maturity, among other things, is a real factor in determining what kids should own, not just financial status. Look at the statistics of who is responsible for the most accidents on the road. There's really no debating whether the experience or skill exists in most kids at that age.
Maybe entitled is the wrong word by absolute definition but you understand the point of what I'm saying so hopefully you won't fixate on one word and miss the entire rest of it.

All the younger members are going to howl, but I agree that youth and inexperience probably contributed to this accident, even without the presence of alcohol. Too much car for most younger drivers. Sad that it turned out this way.

But if all the actions were the fault of the kid (and he may have bought the car, hes 19 and early AP1s are becoming more affordable), then why place the blame on the parents? All teens have it in them to speed/be cocky/overconfident - you name it. It's up to them, not the parents, to put a cap on their speed. The kid could have been driving a Civic, and the result might well have been the same. I don't think it's a question of having "too much car" even. A responsible driver will be responsible, regardless of what car they are driving.

RIP for sure. When it comes down to it no one REALLY knows what happened, only speculation. Guys this is certainly no time for arguing. Just pay respects to these two teens and save the bickering for another thread. I too know what its like to wreck an s2k. I was just lucky to make it out with my life. My prayers go out to their families. Hopefully this will slow some of us down.
I had a friend that hit a tree at about 50mph. His car was bent in half and he was seriously injured. A tree has no give when you hit it. That car could have easily have only been going 40mph
i'm going to be harsh about this.
if you see the pictures of the s2k and still think he was travelling 40-50 mph...
you need a slap in the back of the head to loosen up some cobwebs.
look at the pictures again and THINK.
doesn't matter that the tree has no give...you still need to be going VERY FAST to have MAJOR damage in MULTIPLE locations of the vehicle.

It's not just that trees don't give. An even bigger problem is that they are swords. The concentrate the force of the impact into a small area rather than smearing it out over a large one like a wall does.
That being said, I'm certain those pictures are not the aftermath of a 45 mph crash.

Mt fiance rolled my sisters explorer going 30km/h thats only 19mph
it was fairly crumpled up, and written off, she was fine.
Looks like they may have been going faster, but it doesnt take a lot of speed to do a lot of damage, try running into a tree at 10mph, it still hurts.
sad to see people passing so young RIP

A poster in the Metro section had this to say:
"Copied this from the Honda Tech Link. Black S2K is his boy's screen name he said this...
He was Not racing. He was trying to catch up to the red tibsy cause he got stuck at the previouse light. The driver of the red tibsy said as soon as Joe was about to pass him he herd his VTEC kick then both of them hit a dip. Joe bottomed out lost control slid 1000ft across 3 lanes hit a tree flipped took out a light post and hit a second tree where his car stopped.
The picture they have in the video of Joe its not Joe. The news found a different Joe Spires on myspace and stole a picture.
Heres what he really looked like. He is the one in the middle sitting on the ledge. That picture was takin at the borgata meet."
