Default Extended Warranty

I have been visiting this forum the last 3 weeks and greatly appreciate the wealth of valuable information that was posted. My Honda dealership notified me that the production schedule for my white/red S2K is 2/17!!! It has been a long wait (the order was placed on 7/31/01) but, based on the forum discussions, it will no doubt be worth the wait. I have a couple of questions and value your opinion:

1. Extended Warranty: Should I spend $1800 for an extended warranty? I did not asked for the details of the warranty when it was suggested because I didn't plan to buy it. The forum discussions of the transmission problem on this board give me some second thoughts. What has been the typical annual maintenance cost for this model?

2. Performance Driving School: I appreciate your recommendations and approximate costs for any programs that will allow me to safely enjoy my new wheels.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

I'm picking up my car tomorrow (wow, less than 12 hours to go!) and inquired about the extended warranty. $1800 seems pretty steep. I was thinking of the 7year/75K mile, and was quoted $1000. A fair price, but not stunning. Check out the group buy with a dealer in MA - he's charging $795 for the same warranty, with 0% financing included!

No need to decide right away - you can buy the warranty for the same price up to 12 months/12K miles or something like that (unless the regular price goes up). I'm planning on using the extra $1000 to increase my money down and therefore decrease my payments, then get the warranty from the MA dealer (unless I can talk my dealer into a similar deal) in a month or two, after my bank account recovers (plus tax refund, plus bonus due in April....)

The extended warranty also includes roadside assistance, a cash benefit to cover an out-of-town stay while you wait for repairs, trip planning w/maps, etc... Get a brochure from the dealer for the full details.

Like I said, you've got months to decide after you get the car. Don't be rushed into it.

$1800 = taken to the cleaners.

Jonas is right - there's much better prices out there. We recently rana group buy for an extended warranty. It really wasn't a group but per se, since there were no minimum purchase numbers or time set so I don't see any reason why you could not still get the same deal.

Here's the thread: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...40&pagenumber=3 Look for "hffej" threads.

You might be able to get the same prices out of your dealer if you tell them you're planning on getting it somewhere else. Extended warranties are just like cars when it comes to negotiating - a lot of people don't know that.

got my extended warranty 7/100 through my credit union. it was just under $950. and as an added bonus, I can go to any certified mechanic, not just Honda Dealerships and Honda Care. given the issues with dealerships working with this car, I would much rather go to another shop any day, and also get my rental for free. =)

Thank you everybody for the advice. I'll catch up on the link Dave provided.
Congrat, Jonas on your new acquisition. Enjoy.

Can you buy an extended warranty after the factory warranty has run out? I am looking at buying a used S in/around August, and I would definitely be interested in having a warranty on it.
