Default Factory installed alarm?

I am almost certain I am going to close a deal on an 05 S2000 this month. I am debating on getting the factory alarm system installed by the dealer. Any opinions on how good it is vs. and aftermarket system? I think the installed quote was just under $600.

whoa, 600 bucks. for that price you can get a pro to put in a 2way alarm with all kinds of sensors that the factory one does not have. if you do end up going with the factory alarm, don't spend 6 hundo on it. that is my opinion.

$600 That's too high......

As for the Factory alarm.......it's ok.... You can do better with aftermarket.

I went with the aftermarket upgrade and it seems to be doing just fine.

I don't think I would pay $600 for a factory alarm. Get an aftermarket one with all the features you want (proximity, ignition shutoff, glass breakage sensor, 2 wy pager, etc. The two way pager is pretty nice. I believe most of the aftermarket alarms are made by the same company, DEI.

You can buy the factory alarm and install it yourself for much less than $600.

Buy the factory alarm from someplace like handa accesories for less than $300 and install it yourself. That's what I should have done.

Jon;

My vote for the factory alarm as following reasons;

1.) No BS at waranty time

2.) All pre-wired modular connector installation-no cutting and chopping-even the LED warning is intergrated into the dash.

3.) You can add a shock sensor (or whatever you want) very easily by tapping into the hood switch lead.

4.) You can add Modifry's neat momentary ground button that power-unlocks the passenger door-even with the engine running.

5.) No extra remotes.

Regards,
BD

All I know is that the dealer wanted to sell me one at purchase for $600 and before they finally gave up on selling it to me they were down to something like $250. So you can only imagine what it is really worth. Just remember when you go aftermarket that these shops are very negotiable. You need to haggle to get the best price.

I bought mine in the "For Sale" forum of this board. A Brand new factory alarm that was never installed. I'd probably buy the car without the alarm and find one elsewhere (hardtopguy, other board members, Ebay, etc...). I'm sure you will be able to find one around $250??? It is fairly simple to install- all plug and play with no wire splices. If you do a search, I think the installation instructions are posted somewhere on the board.

The toughest part (actually this isn't very hard to do...) is removing the drivers seat. You need to remove the seat to mount the alarm. Before you do this, I would recommend buying a set of McGard seat locks to protect your seats from theft. I installed my alarm after the seat locks (who knew I had to remove the driver's seat...). It would be much easier to install both at the same time.

P.S.-If you can't find the installation instructions using search, PM me-I'lll send you a copy.

I like having a pager since most people ignore car alarms.
