Default Honda or aftermarket alarm, thats the Question

What do you guys think I was leaning towards aftermarket, such as a Viper or Clifford but now after a mini-meet we had yesterday, im wondering if an aftermarket is really worth it. Seems like the factory alarm has all the features i want, except for the "Proximity" sensor which im told is a real pain in the butt. Goes off often depending on where youre parked.

Prox sensors can be a pain, but once you get them adjusted, they are not too bad. They can be added to basically any alarm, including the OEM one.

The OEM one is OK, but I don't think you get much bang for your buck. Check out wlaurent's alarm system for a greal low priced option. He provides very easy to follow instructions and quite a few people here have them.

I went higher end with my alarm. I want to know if it is going off so I got a pager alarm. Basically the car can page you within a certian range if anything is going on with it. I have a Compustar, but Viper also has one that is very good.

I am picking up my Clifford Matrix 2.5X w/pager today...I still hear it is one of the best. But since most all are made by Directed Electronics (DEI); Clifford, Viper, Hornet to name a few, you're probably OK with any.

Thanks RUexp and Kronos, I definately want the 2-way pager system feature. Actually i went to "Tweeter" this past weekend and looked at the Vipers So i think im leaning towards that. I would consider the Clifford Matrix, however the only guys who retail them are "Best-Buy". A friend of mine works Part-time at the local best buy here but he suggests not to get a alarm installed there due to the uncompetant installers who work there. I want to go all out with an alarm and willing to pay more for a good clean quality install Thanks guys for the tip. I think im convinced and will go with a Directed (Viper) alarm.

Ruexp, I would also consider a Compustar however no-one sels those around here. The only thing i dont need is the Remote-start. My friend in NJ has a Compustar on his S2K and he says he really likes it. I think im going to go with a Viper or Clifford then.

I would not go to Tweeter, Circuit City or Best Buy for an install. The quality of work at that type of store is not consistant. I would find a good audio shop to get it done at. Your best bet for a good audio shop in your area is to as the people in your local forum.

BTW -- If you are happy with the Clifford or Viper, then go for it. If you want the CompuStar, then check out their website for their contact number. Call them and get a list of installers/dealers in your area. I had to jump through some hoops to find a reputable installer selling CompuStar, but I feel it was worth it. The website is http://www.compustar.org

Thanks man There are several Specialty stereo shop around here but i havent tried those yet. Maybe this weekend i will go through the yellow-pages and find the ones that appear to be good with installs. BTW, i tried emailing Compustar and havent heard back They dont have a list of dealers on thier site, you actually have to contact them and theyre supposed to send you a listing i guess. Still havent seen anything from them.

I had to call Compustar. They gave me dealer names one at at time until I finally asked for a list of EVERYTING in my area code. Then they e-mailed me a list.

Some questions to ask potential shops:

How many S2000's have you done?

Can I have a referance from an S2000 owner that you worked on?

Where do you normally place the major components on an S2000 install?

This car seems to be more tricky than other models of car. You do not want to be the guinnea pig for their experiments on installing alarms on S2000s.

You may also try to mess them up with questions about the "automatic transmission" Like: Have you installed the remote start on any automatic S2000s? If they say: Oh sure we have! then you know they have no. Things like that. Just protect yourself.

Also try to hookup with other S2000 owners in the area and see who they have used.
