Occasionally I have found that my car seems to hit the rev limiter at about 6000 RPM in first gear. It's a little disconcerting because I'm ready to get rolling. I think it happens when the car in not warmed up yet. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal and designed to protect the engine or is it possibly a sign of a problem? I have a 2001 with about 1100 miles on it.

There is a rev limiter that prevents vtec until the engine is warmed up (3 bars). Hence why people say make sure it's warmed up first. It's a very violent experience and not at all pleasant.

perfectly normal, make sure you have atleast 3 bars on the temp gauge before going even remotely close to 6k rpm's.
i would actully wait atlast another 2 minutes after the 3 bars on the temp before going to VTEC.

jelliotlevy,

Did you amke sure 3 bars were showing on the temp guage. You have to warm up the car properly before vtec. If the car isn't warmed u properly, you won't feel the vtec transition. You can also rev the car to about 7500 rpms beforethe rev limiter kicks in.

AND HOW!!!!!! I wish I would have read this thread back when I first got my ride. I couldn't figure out why the hell the car would thrash me about at 6k. OH GEEZ.... learn the hard way.

bayarea408 has a great point, it seems like it doesn't take long for 3 bars to arrive, especially here in SoCal, but it sure doesn't feel like the car is warmed up yet, so I usually wait a few more minutes past 3 bars just to be safe. And then .... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the S2000 fly-by-wire, or just dirty ol' linkage?

Mine is too, but you have to watch out for those pucker marks on the seat cushion.
