Default gas gauge question

how many bars are there when the "gas low" warning appears?

My gas light goes ON with two bars showing, but I wouldn't be surprised if it differs from car to car. They may not be calibrated exactly the same.

And I've driven it until all 20 bars are gone.

If you're worried about the gap between the permanent empty line and the last bar, don't be, it's normal. There should be 20 bars lit when the tank is full

Sometimes I see the gas low symbol when I have two bars left and sometimes when I have one bar left.

I use the trip odometer to keep track of when I should fill it up instead. 200 miles for "around town" driving and 300 miles of highway driving.

As many of us have found out, the gas guage on the car varies a lot. I've seen the gas light come on when I have 2 bars, and sometimes it comes on when I have no bars.

This gauge is really weird. I've had it go down to no bars and then come back to one for quite a while! This may be a stretch but it seems like the display is influenced by your driving. If I drive hard, it goes from 2 bars to one and then to none within about 5 miles. If I then start to drive "nice" it will go back to one bar. I also drove about 30 miles on no bars and only put 11.2 gal in. The tank holds 13.x so there was a lot in reserve.

Personally, I don't even let the "Low Gas" warning light come on at all. I usually fill up when I have about 1/4 tank left because I don't want to take any chances with meter inaccuracies, and I don't want any crap sitting in the bottom of the tank to be sucked up and clog the fuel filter.

i've had times when i'll be driving and a few minutes later, 2 or 3 bars appear. but i'm not complaining, the gauge hasn't failed me once yet.

I usually keep my tank half-full (or half-empty depending on how you see it), in case i need that extra speed (from weight reduction)
