The CR also lacks sound deadening found in the non-CR. You guys have me waivering a little bit... I'll consider a non-CR if the price is right. It seems that the impressive deals on a new S2000 are for the CR and not the non-CR. I guess no one wants a convertible that isn't a convertible...

Though I have not had seat time in a CR I have had plenty of seat and wheel time in my friends Porsche 968 'm030?' option package .. aka Club Sport. The ride is so g*ddam bad that most driving time is just miserable. The CR may not be as as*ometr severe but the published spring rates would make me want to test drive and see. A base S is no marshmallow and will both reward a capable driver and punish the neophyte. If you see yourself as a potential track junkie a CR is definitely a great choice, but as a 'sportscar' the base model delivers a great package. Good luck in making your decision and choosing the model that works best for YOU.

If you have to ask, then the CR is probably not for you. Its hardcore open top and makes not excuses for its features, or lack of. Just the same, if you have to ask about cars like the Porsche GT3, then its not for you, as that car will beat you up, or else you will break it as it takes an extra measure of effort to drive daily.
Would someone who wants the Lotus Exige S 240 consider an Elise instead?? Same thing.

Consider? Yes, I considered them both, and then bought a Porsche. The CR is a great car. I would have considered that, however I am hopelessly (still) in love with my old '01, and counter to some ideas on this forum, I don't think it's the best plan to have two of the same (weekend car) model under the same roof.

I think you will be surprised how many people actually think about this question.

Think about", I fully agree. I am making a point that in actuality, the cars are very different. The exige takes that Lotus platform over the top when compared with the Elise. You won't get the same experience 1 vs. the other. Just the Same the CR won't be able to do what the base can do. The base S2000 looks much more classy, rides smoother, has a soft top, etc. The CR will not be able to do that.

to me, the main reason to get a CR would be if you're seriously comptetive in auto-x and want to kick butt in stock class, or if you don't care that much about top-down driving.

I'd love a CR w/ a convertible top.

I had this same question in June before I got my CR. I was going to get a regular s2000 and saw the CR and had to have it. I have a family connection with the dealer and was able to borrow a regular s2000 for a week and drive it just to make sure I wanted one period and loved it. Then drove to another dealer to test drive a CR they had in stock and loved it even more. I now have a blue Cr with no regrets (dealer traded for it) The CR is everything the regular one is and more. Yes the ride is stiffer but on good roads you don't mind it at all and on the curves well I would not trade it for anything. I am not a big top down guy so I don't mind the hard top at all since it stays on just about always. With the top off you got to love the speedster humps. Even though the sound insulation is removed the car is less noisy because of the hard top. The quicker steering is most noticable and a blast. The body is stiffer and more solid becuase of the of cross bracing and you really do notice it.( in a good way) I feel like I am driving a little indy car. I wasn't sure about the wing at first but in person it looks great and makes the car.
Do yourself a favor and drive both I think you will end up with the CR it is a blast. Pure raw sports car. Hope this helps

When buying the s2k I drove all three (ap1, ap2 and ap2cr). AP1 too old, ap2 was good, but when you drive a cr, you know why you can no longer buy the base. Handling is vastly improved and is a great car for people who will not tinker too much with suspension mods and who need a hardtop. My hardtop is on 80% of the time in the summer and 100% of the time in the winter so it was a must. I will never lower the tinker with suspension so its perfect for me. For those driving in the winter, you will love having cloth over non-heated leather seats. I know I will!

Drive a base vs. cr. That will be the tell all. Then look into whether you can have a car with only a removable hard top.

How's rear visibility with that park bench?
