Default hardtop/softtop questions

there's another thing that i haven't seen talked of much - when the hardtop is installed, what's to stop the softtop from accidentally becoming activated? is it disabled when the hardtop is on? is there a switch cover so you don't accidentally hit it? do you use the boot when the hardtop is on? maybe the switch is more involved than just a button so you can't just do it accidentally... i don't know - it's why i'm asking.

Electrically, there's nothing to stop you trying to raise the soft top. However, on the rear corners of the hardtop, on the lip under the window, are brackets, each with a rubber bumper. These are positioned so they are directly above the rear corners of the folded soft top. if you tried to raise the top, they'd contact the bumpers and stop. If you were stupid enough to keep trying to raise it, it would probably overheat the motor or (more likely) blow the motor fuse. (I'm pretty sure that's exactly what these bumpers are intended for; they serve no other purpose.)

It was my belief that when you plug the rear defogger in that this disabled the soft top motors.

I don't have my defroster switch installed, and the soft top does not operate. It could be that it does, but the rubber bumpers on the hard top prevent it from raising.

If you look carefully at the mounting plate on the left hand side of the car (drivers side on LHD cars) you will see there is a microswitch (small but just behind the hole the "pin" goes into) that cuts off the softtop motors when the hardtop is installed.

Check it out Its just a shame that this cannot also be used to re-enable the ultrasonics on the UK Cat 1 alarm rather than the shoddy aftermarket switch install...
