Harsh C&D CR Review
I really don't think the CR is for everyone. It's definitely not a DD for the regular streets, and in that sense, it may just work as intended, a weekend track car that you can drive around town w/o breaking the bank.
It's a great package for people who don't intend to mod - it's for the layman weekender who decides to track the car 2-3x a yr. For the aging man/woman who wants to regain a bit of youth, knowingly sacrificing the audio and AC believing that s/he's "suffering" for the cause of lighter is righter.
Is the review harsh? I don't quite think so, the author does not outright slam the car, but merely gives his opinion that cost/performance ratio is better had on the standard S2K.

What I think is funny about this whole thread is the majority of people who say the "CR sucks" are AP1 owners. Hmmm, what a coincidence, since fans of AP1's have always had a negative comment about the AP2's.
As someone who's owned both an AP1 and now an AP2, there is no comparison in my opinion. The AP2 feels better made, and I've had NO problems with my 05'. I can't say the same thing for the 02' I previously had.
Onto the CR, I'd take one in a heart beat! It WILL be a collectors item one day, and a major plus is you never have to worry about a tear in your top. I don't care what the writer says, the CR is better then the regular AP2.
Would I like to see Honda make a change in the engine some day? Oh yeah! If Honda ever put the Accord V6 engine in the S2K, that would become a street terror! Until then, either live with what you've got, or you whiners can go get something else! It's as simple as that!

This dude is full of shit.
Pray do tell where the market for your supposed ~$60k Honda S2000 comes from - who the F@#k would want to buy a full race spec S2000. Not many people. But many folks like myself would be more the willing to fork over an additional 2-3k to get a CR that performs CONSIDERABLY better than a stock S2000 in track situations.
The CR is more track-oriented than the standard S2000, plain and simple. It's targeted at many track day addicts that among other things, put a hardtop and change out the suspension on their stock S2000s in search of better laptimes. However they still want their vehicle to be streetable/DD'able in a pinch, and it needs to be AFFORDABLE.
Just for the record, a CR, heck a stock S2000 would edge out most if not all of its competition:
- Miata: bye-bye
- Sky Redline/Solstice GXP: good thrust and torque, but a poor handler. Equal to an S2k in a straight line, and far slower in the twisty bits
- Z4 3.0: cya later
- Z4 3.0si: a competent car that would be be some stiff competition. The previous model with 30 less hp used to get edged out by the S2000 in laptimes. I'd venture to say this "si" version would be as quick, but not quicker.
- 350Z vert: can you say porker
- Boxster: truly stiff competition. But still no faster than a regular S2000 in a straightline, and as competent in the turns. However, a CR would definetely be quicker.
Just for the record - ALL the above cars except the Miata and GXP/Redline twins COST MORE than the S2000. I'd say the S2000 still kicks ass years later, and the CR even more so.
If its not for you fine. Piss off, and let 1500 other folks who want one get on with their business. And do yourself a favor and attend a business school or somesuch.

Not full race spec... I know very few cars that fit that. And, I didn't say that...
NORMAL sports car spec, like oh maybe the base EVO, the Sti, The Loti, the 350 track. All better brakes, better struts, and faster shifters. Boxster, much more expensive than any I listed, but out of our league entirely. All MUCH faster...
Honda specs paddles on the FIT...
FYI-Most tracks don't allow a non-spec roll bar.

Ruprecht,
I bet you still haven't driven one yet have you??? You should be ashamed of yourself and I think I will tell your mother that you don't play well with others. Bad Ruprecht and Intj.

I still have not driven one yet. And thanks to you, my Mom just sent me to timeout in the corner and took away my keys for a week.

The S2000 isn't a NORMAL sports car. I'm shocked to read that Sti, Evo and 350 are in the same sentence with "faster shifters". I really hope you didn't mean that. Those 3 cars you listed have some pretty sloppy and SLOW shifters.
I like how you said "all MUCH faster".... 'MUCH' being the funny part. put the right driver in an S2000 and I garuntee you that it will keep up with any Sti/Evo or Track 350z on a track/autox/fun road.
As for paddles on the Fit, c'mon... Have you driven a paddled Fit? It's a joke.

Ruprecht,
I sent your Mom an email. She is going to have you write 20 times on the board, "I will not rag on Mike's CR anymore until I drive one or I will end up in time out again"
Just harassing ya man, you really need to drive one. Then you will feel like a reformed lady of the night. Of course, this will require you to save up all your milk money and buy one. Worse things could happen to you though . . . . . . . .

Old Guy, I do admire how excited you are about your CR, very happy for you. I'm not writing this in trying to burst your bubble or anything.
I'm on my second S2000, my first was an AP1(03) and honestly, the most I got out of the CR were memories from my old S2000. I do love the CR, hence I put the CR wheels, lip and a few other things on my current 06.... but I do think you're exagerating just a bit. I've driven a CR a few times and did enjoy it.
I think you need to take a ride in an OLDER S2000 and realize there is really not that big of a difference.
There were a few things holding me back from getting a CR...
I NEED a soft top, they didn't offer it in Laguna and I like leather.

i think the engine is already maxed out as is...
Oh yeah, what about direct injection, that seems to help other high compresion engines. Lets not forget about FI either, look at the RDX... Don't kid yourself, Honda could make more power if they wanted. If they have the balls to do it is another story though.

It's not maxed out. A better flowing intake, header, CAT and tune would help. Just like people do with a CAI, TP and VFAC tune.
Emissions.
An N/A 4 cyl. making 240 hp, that has an 11:1 compression is pretty close to the limit, emission wise.
