How did I miss this? I just discovered that the rear window issues are addressed in a TSB (#00037). I guess that explains why people have been able to get theirs replaced.

You learn something every day.

I wasn't aware that this was a Technical Service Bulletin. What I got from my dealer in October, 1999 was a Service Memo containing the following text (the formatting doesn't display correctly in UBB):

Date: October 8, 1999

To: Honda Automobile Service Departments

From: American Honda Auto Engineering

Re: S2000 Rear window cleaning

The rear window of the S2000 will collect haze or film on both the inside and the outside of the vinyl. The inside film comes from the gassing of the interior plastics just like the other windows of a new car. The outside film comes from exhaust, blowby and other airborne particles.

The Vinyl Window is more difficult to clean than glass windows. Below are products that will help with cleaning of the vinyl window.

Product name Part number
Meguiar's Clear Plastic Cleaner #17
Meguiar's Clear Plastic Polish #10
3M Plastic Cleaner 051131-39017
3M Plastic Polish 051131-39010
3M Perfect-it III non scratching Detailing Cloth 051131-06016

The rear window of the S2000 is very easily scratched. A new terry-cloth towel may be soft enough, however a terry-cloth towel that has been used and laundered several times will scratch the window.

The 3M Detailing Cloth is a special weave that captures dirt and film without scratching the window. It is strongly advised to use the 3M cloth when cleaning the rear window with either the 3M products or the Meguiar's products. The 3M products or the Meguiar's products work as a system; use both the cleaner and polish together from one manufacturer.

Any time the outside of the rear window needs to be cleaned, rinse the window with lots of water to remove and loose dust or dirt. With a sweeping-lifting motion, lift off any dirt that remains on the outside surface before applying any cleaner or polish.

When opening the roof, make sure that the outside of the rear window is clean. Any dust or dirt will scratch the window when it folds.

It is also very important that the inside rear shelf is clean. The rear window rests in the rear shelf when the roof is folded down. Any dust or dirt will scratch the window.

I have the Honda TSB and it is very detailed(2 pages of info), right down to recommending the Miata Tube from www.allroadsters.com.

I would gladly post it but unfortunately, my scanner hasn't worked very well since my son and his friends knocked it off of my desk horsing around with a football!

I agree with you 100%. We are really in a no win situation. It does not matter if they replace the plastic window or not, because the new one will be as bad as the one they replace within 8-10 months.
Have you ever had a chance to compare our plastic window against Boxster or Z3 windows? Ours looks like something you would purchase from Kmart.

I couldn't imagine that happening!
