In the US, the seatbelt issue is being handled state by state. I'm not sure how many states passed seatbelt laws, but my state, Maryland, passed the law several years ago. Before the legislation, I wore my seatbelt always. I felt like I was slipping out of my seat when I did not wear it. The belt saved my butt several times as a teenager. I don't agree with the law because I feel it should be each persons choice, but if it helps some folks see the light, then its a useful law.

Glad you survived a nasty one, but don't assume that you are recovered from the experience so soon (I speak from experience).

One thing that might help.... Think how much more tragic it might have been if his wife and young child had been in the car with him that day. At least their lives were spared and they were spared the guilt and remorse of him taking someone elses life as well as his own.

I am hoping the tree will be ok. It was an innocent victim in this senseless event.

It is always sobering to hear these stories. The temptation to react badly is very high with this car, so it helps to keep the consequences in mind.

Ronald, although it's certainly easier said than done, you should not have the slightest ounce of guilt. Just be glad that you are ok, and that the fool did not take you with him. Good luck with the repairs.
