looks like you might have to drill out some of those plastic "rivets"

So there is no clean way to remove the button panel? Do they sell plugs so I can plug up those holes and just leave it as is?

i drilled out those plastic "rivets" to install a shift boot.

it is 2 panels; if you are careful with the drill, you will not punch through the whole thing; the top part will look normal.

Went through the same procedure when I "polished" my shifter trim piece. I didn't drill anything though, I just slowly pried the pieces apart until the little plastic rivets just snapped. It really didn't take much to do it, just pry slowly and they'll snap rather easily. Whether this will work the same way on the defroster swith, I have no idea.

When you say snap do you mean break or snap apart gracefully and can snap back together?

No... when mine snapped apart, they broke. It broke the top of the rivets off into little plastic rings that looked like washers leaving the posts behind. I thought about dabbing some epoxy on the posts after I was done so it would be every bit as good as new, but then decided not to since there were already quite a few screws holding everything tight there already and it'd make it easier if I ever wanted to pull it apart again.

Interesting.. I am giving serious consideration to just buying two placeholders for those buttons and being done with it all. Thanks for the info
