^it is all about practice. Anyone that has tracked has had to learn to downshift rev match smoothly so as not to upset the balance of the car.

BE CAREFUL when practicing as the car can become jerky and make you go out of control if done wrong.

I love rev matching and with my spoon n1 even more so now, but i try not to for i feel like an idiot in normal traffic.

[QUOTE=Neutered Sputniks,Apr 10 2008, 05:05 PM]But if I'm cruising at 35mph, shouldn't the dogs/synchros for 3rd be just as effective at spinning up to the appropriate speed without me gating 4th and 5th?

If you want to see how a good driver shifts, and how he coordinates and times his shifting with his footwork, watch the following video, paying particular attention to the knees and right hand.

Thanks.

So when im cruising at 55 in 6th, and like u said, shift down to 5th, then 4th, then 3rd because i want to take off like george jetson, do i keep the clutch in and just move the gear lever into the positions or do i revmatch downshift through all the gears? reason im asking is this...i was freewaying my way on, and a friend pulled near me. now if i wanted to take off, id obviously want to take off in third gear.
a. Clutch in, 6th-3rd with a little blip clutch out and then floor
b. Clutch in, 6th-5th-4th-3rd, little blip clutch out and floor
c. Clutch in, 6th-5th blip clutch out clutch in 5th-4th blip clutch out clutch in 4th-3rd blip throttle clutch out and floor??
im taking the risk of having a lot of people slap their heads and say omg this fool, but id rather know for sure since im still learning.

HAHAHA! That reminds me of back in the day when I had my sleeper crx. I saw my cousin at a red light and decided that I would give him a little bump, well, I misjudged and smacked him pretty hard! Totally worth it though, split his rear bumper in half and pushed him into the intersection!

i normally only downshift+revmatch when im slowing down to make a right turn + grn light, so i can speed out of the turn.

if its just a straight stop at a stop light... just slow cruise down and downshift w/o rev match.

I think I'm downshifting with rev matching, but it's so subconscious, I'm not sure. Anywho, I've got a couple of sharp turns on a route I take often, and it sure is fun to downshift into second and slip around those suckers, rev match or not!

I dunno about physics, or all those smart people things

But what i do know is i've never replaced a Tranny, never replaced a clutch and rarely replaced brake pads.

124k miles on my old 2000 Civic SI, still has the clutch/pads that came w/ the car when i bought it at 3 miles on the odometer. I downshift to aid in braking (along w/ slight brake pressure) and also to keep the gear i may need if i have to stop braking and MOVE should it be required for whatever reason (light goes green, someone shoots out of a parking lot and is about to broad side me... etc) I don't ever get into 1st while slowing down till i've come to a stop... even then clutch is in, car is in 2nd. Stop, shift to 1st ... prepare to leave stop light lol.

Ooo... i did lie tho, on my 97 Eclipse i had a altercation w/ a driveway at about 80 miles an hour... car went up car came down backwards (but right side up thankfully), things no work no more... lol. Body shop fixed it, later on the tranny died. Took it in and the tranny guy said my tranny looked perfect, he figured when the car came down the clutch was out when the wheels hit dirt again and i snapped some gear teeth that began to work thier way through the tranny snapping off other teeth. Other than the cleanly broken gears the tranny looked perfect to him and that was w/ 80k on that car.

Didn't realize there was a problem w/ skipping gears... usually end up skipping 5th if i'm just cruisin down the highway... oops.

Either way i'm not likely to quit driving the way i do

Everyone Take care!

J/Tharg!

I rather replace my brake components before anything else with the transmission.
