I rather replace my brake components before anything else with the transmission.

not sure... after all the post before his i stated that i'd not replaced my tranny OR clutch OR my brake pads on my civic in 120k miles...

Obviously i didn't track the car (lots more brake usage i would assume) and obviously i drove a lot of highway miles...

still... ANY kind of wear is dependent on the user. I knew a guy who went through three clutches in 1 year on a civic because he was next to useless in driving a stick... ::

When revmatching, its hard to keep it smooth withouth the car jerking right? I'm trying to practice a bit but I feel like Im not doing it right.

On you tube an s2000 caught fire downshifting...can that happen if you accidentally downshift to the wrong gear?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=p5YV0vJwum0

So the point of revmatching is to downshift every gear for a "smoother" stop without using ur brakes until 10mph or below...correct?

That J's Car in that race was a 2.2 Liter With a Rev Limit to 8kRpms!

Wakisaka, which was the driver of the J's Car in that race overreved the S2k and he Blow it up!

So when im cruising at 55 in 6th, and like u said, shift down to 5th, then 4th, then 3rd because i want to take off like george jetson, do i keep the clutch in and just move the gear lever into the positions or do i revmatch downshift through all the gears? reason im asking is this...i was freewaying my way on, and a friend pulled near me. now if i wanted to take off, id obviously want to take off in third gear.
a. Clutch in, 6th-3rd with a little blip clutch out and then floor
b. Clutch in, 6th-5th-4th-3rd, little blip clutch out and floor
c. Clutch in, 6th-5th blip clutch out clutch in 5th-4th blip clutch out clutch in 4th-3rd blip throttle clutch out and floor??
im taking the risk of having a lot of people slap their heads and say omg this fool, but id rather know for sure since im still learning.
i also want to know the answer for this question, thanks!

The correct way is to downshift with rev-matching into the gear you want to go in.

I love rev-matching this car.

i decelerate in different ways, depending on the situation.

if i see a red light ahead with many cars sitting there, i will generally rev-match in anticipation of the light turning green shortly.

if i just saw a green light go yellow>red, i will just let off the throttle, coast to the light, then clutch in at around 10-15 mph and drop to neutral. i also do this when i'm coming up to a stop sign.

if that light turns green again suddenly, i just blip the throttle and shift to whatever gear i need to be in to accelerate again. if i'm going 15mph, i will blip the throttle to about 2500 RPM and shift to 2nd. i think that's pretty close, if memory serves me correct.

i am in the camp that agrees that unnecessary downshifting creates more strain on the transmission than the strain that braking causes on the braking system. the main reason is because clutch jobs are in excess of $1,000 and brake jobs are either less than $200 or i can do them myself.

people who downshift from 6-5-4-3-2-1 every time they come to a stop...wow. you don't think that's excessive? not to mention, you're still using your brakes.

I'm not sure about the post either, but I am sure that I'm impressed by anyone who can get 120k miles out of a set of brake pads.

What kind of gas mileage were you getting?
In my Civic i regularly got 30 miles or better... sometimes wose if i was really doggin the 8k red line

In my S i've only put in about 4 fill ups so far... anywhere from 26mpg to very nearly 30. rekon that one depends on how often i play w/ the 8k redline in that one too hehehe.
