How Fast "Should" You Drive in the Rain
wing, it definitely is possible to cruise along steadily at a higher speed provided that you're riding over a fairly uniform layer of water (i.e. staying in the center lanes help with this). it's the large patches of standing water that will get you and they're most frequent in the outer lanes where the water runs off to. and it was in the outer lane where i spun a while back. now i leave myself much more margin by going way slower. i have too much to lose by 'seeing what speed my car can maintain in the rain'.
the "as slow as your patience can allow" and "don't compete with traffic" are good ones as it's hard to push the ego aside sometimes

I read about all these "I spun threads" makes you REALLY REALLY wonder.
Alfredo, I was driving from Syracuse to Ottawa yesterday in the rain you speak of, I was doing 115km/h there was no issue.

I got my S0-3's specifically for their wet handling ability. However, I still do not drive fast in the rain. This car simply is not a safe car to drive in any less than optimal condition so drive smart.
Hi:
I drive in 'tiers' I slow down to 65 the minute the roadway gets wet. Then down to 50 as the rain starts to pick up. After that I try to get off the freeway, and travel on secondary roads if the rain is too bad.
A lot depends on the tyres. As others have said I've found (only on my second set of rears, 20k miles on car) the tyres seem fine up to a point, then quickly loose rain grip. With practice you can feel when the rear is breaking slightly loose, and that is my cue to slow down another 5 or 10 mph. The 'tier' aspect is mostly to keep myself honest. I've read just too many reports of wipeouts in the rain.
