i use the guage and trip meter to guess at gas consumption and what i have left..usually when i get to 2 bars it is time to start looking for a station. i put about 10-11 gallons in, my mileage is about 22-24 average. so 230 miles plus is also a good time to think about filling up.

With no bars left, you should have about 2 gallons remaining. I drove well beyond the time all the bars appeared, and had about 1 gallon left when I finally got to a gas station.
