THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE S2K PARKING BRAKE!

I have experienced this, and many others have as well.

For all of those giving such helpful advice to Tim, maybe you could advise me, too. Answer this: How exactly do YOU go about parking your car in gear with the engine running? I have never figured out a way to do this without jackstands. Please educate me. Anyone?

I realize that in THIS particular situation, Tim may have parked with the engine off, handbrake on, car in neutral. Yes, that was a mistake.

But that is not what he is asking about. He is asking if anybody has had a problem with their handbrake.

If you have NOT had such a problem, and you have made a post to this thread, I am afraid you have not helped very much and you may have reading difficulties. Give the guy a break! Sorry for the pun...

I have had my S2000 since October 1999. Personally, on several occasions I have needed to keep my engine running while parked. If there is any incline, the car may begin to roll even while the parking brake is engaged. This is particularly a problem if the car has been run and the brakes have been used prior to parking, as it seems calipers/pads/disks seem to cool and contract. Pulling the PROPERLY ADJUSTED handbrake to its maximum WILL NOT HOLD THE CAR ON AN INCLINE as the brakes begin to cool.

I have owned and driven many cars in my lifetime, and none has had as much a problem with this as the S2000.

I myself have NOT had an accident related to this problem, but only because I discovered it early. I have nothing to shirk onto the shoulders of Honda, but I wouldn't mind if this SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT was acknowledged and fixed by the company.

Bottom Line: The handbrake on the S2000 is nearly useless. Having it on the car is more of a hazard than if it was not there, because people like Tim might be tempted to use it.

I give up. Can you tell me why you need to park your car and leave the engine running?

I have also noticed that our handbrake sucks and absolutely do not rely on it for this very reason. I just always figured it wasn't adjusted tight enough because my Accord's brake always worked great. I figure stopping and restarting the car is safer.

Every morning, I have to get out of my car to shut the drive gate. My driveway is sloped downward. I leave the engine running, car in neutral and set the handbrake firmly. It has never slipped when firmly engaged. Then again, in the morning, the brakes are nice and cold, so there's no contraction. Plus, it takes only about 10 seconds to shut the gate.

I have owned 3 Hondas now.

2000 Civic- Rear drums, car wouldn't roll with just the e-brake set. Still parked in gear for safey reasons.

2002 RSX Type S - Rear discs, same system as the S2000 as far as I can remember. Car would roll unless e-brake was completely yanked up as high as humanly possible. Area of travel is twice as long as the S2000. Only reason I did not park the RSX in gear was because of my remote starter for winter. I had the RSX roll down my driveway last fall. I'm not blaming this on Acura/Honda.

2001 S2000 - Never had an issue with rolling. Only time this car is not in gear is if I want to use my remote starter (pretty rare).

Can anybody tell me why they think there is a hand brake on the S2000, if it is not to prevent the car from rolling when it is stopped?

Is it just to add another step to putting the top down?
