independant rebound/compression settings

independant rebound/compression settings
can somebody explain to me what is so special about having coilovers with independant rebound and compression settings?
how do they differ from conventional coilovers where rebound and compression are adjusted simultaneously.

The basic answer is that more adjustments there are, the more flexibility in custom tailoring the suspension to different types of applications. This is the ultimate for optimizing, but there is no best setup for everything. So to get the best for any situation requires constant retuning of settings, which most people don't want or not capable of doing. Too many adjustments can turn out to be a bad thing or just another unused feature for typical drivers.
So the with increasing complexity, price and control is:
- 1 way - rebound control only
- 2 way - independent rebound and compression
- 3 way - independent rebound, low speed compression, and high speed compression
As I understand it, rebound controls the sprung weight of the car. Compression controls the unsprung weight. High speed compression effects mostly ride quality (i.e. bumps, potholes) and slow speed compression turn control. Of course there is more to it, there's books dedicated to this sort of stuff.
Anyways, some help to answer the original question, with independent rebound and compression you can tune handling like in this link.
