Insurance is hell
Everyone talks about purchase price and cost of ownership. This kid is in college working for MINIMUM wage.
When I was 18 I was making about 1.5 times minimum wage and had a $12,000 car that I bought new. (This was in 1993.) I had to struggle sometimes to make the payments and insurance on that.
I can't believe you are making the payments on the S2000, so I don't feel bad that you cannot afford the insurance.

Stupid insurance company. I got a great deal from american express last 6mos. 488/6mons. I called today to renew and it jumped to 755/6mos. WTF?? They told me that the rate has gone up because too many claims filed in my state. Why should I get penalized for some dumbfuucks out there who don't know how to drive. I am so pissed. Sorry about the foul language.

You should look at your coverage amounts. If you just get the basic minimum coverage you may actually pay more per month than you would if you increased the coverage limits. I saved a couple hundred bucks a year when I change from 30k/60k/30k coverage to a 100k/300k/100k coverage. My insurance guy said that if the company feels like you are under insured they raise the rates.
You still have to understand that you will likely pay out the nose for insurance living in Cali and being 18 driving a sports car. Not much is in your favor for low insurance right now. I pay $1400/year total for full coverage for my 2 vehicles and when I start getting upset about the cost of insurance I just think back to when I was your age and paid $160/month just for liability coverage on a POS pickup.
This is a good lesson to learn for people who live on a tight budget. Always price insurance before you actually buy the vehicle.

My advice to young people out there: Make sure that you pay for the necessities of life such as food, shelter, and retirement savings before you buy a nice car. Just an older person speaking from experience...
