It's Official!
What we were told by our rep. (and I am looking for Honda stuff that was in print) was that the car would be imported for two years. As I understand it American Honda had signed the contract to import the car for two years. What I heard later was they extended the contract to import the car for atleast another year. I would say that you are right in saying it was probably on a demand basis. Selling = extension not selling = no extention like with Mazda.
One other thing that some people don't realize and may not care. The dealers do not earn S2000's to sell by selling them, like the other models. We earn S2000's by the number of Accords and Civics we sell. It is based on a waited average for you district.
Now that I think about it I am trying to remember if I ever saw anything in writing about the 2 year production and I don't think I ever did. It was generally word of mouth. Although I do remember having a conversation with the Reps at our local Car Show in Columbus and they were telling everyone that Honda was only going to produce this car for the states for 2 years.

I paid 5K over MSRP. I'm I upset? Not really. I feel the car is still worth 40K considering what it is capable of, that is, running with much more expensive cars in it's class. I think I got a deal. When I first saw the S2K I figured it was going to MSRP at 40-45K. When I saw it was only 32K my heart leapt from my chest. I couldn't believe it.
As I posted in another thread though... I do like the idea of owning a rare car so I hope Honda America keeps the numbers low.
If that makes me selfish so be it!

I normally don't get into these juvenile discussions (not J's good information, the whole production debate) but I have to say those of you who are throwing a temper trantrum because there will be a 2002 are an embarassment to S2K owners. How could you be so pompous as to think that Honda made this car especially for you, and that more people shouldn't enjoy it. The S2000 will always be limited production compared to most cars on the road, so quit your belly-aching.
To speak to some of the comments people made:
'Honda and the dealers have made a ton of money on us!'
Ummm... wait a minute. Both are in the business of making money, not feeling all happy with themselves about making us a great sports car. And Honda makes NO money on the S2000. It's sole purpose is to create a good brand image. So the longer they produce it, the more of the development cost they will recover. And they might actually start making money.
What annoys me about some people's comments is the lack of gratefulness to Honda for making this car and pricing it like they did. They DO car about enthusiasts, and we should be proud. And if they want to sell more to try and recover some costs, more power to them. And as for the dealers - Yes, some have made crazy money by jacking up prices. But that's the fault to two people - a seedy dealer and a foolish consumer.
'I want a car that I don't see everyday.'
Get a life... get over the fact that you aren't the only human being on the planet. I have several auto enthusiast friends that are going to get S2000's after seeing/riding in mine. And I'm happy about that. I'd much rather share the S2000's specialness with others that will appreciate it. It's incredibly selfish and childish to cling to this 'exclusivity' argument. It's no better than a kid not letting the neighbor kids play in his sandbox. Weak. Grow up.
I bought the car to drive/race and enjoy it... not to let it collect dust in hopes of fortune or to be the only kid on the block with one. There are more important things in life than having an exclusive car... like VTECing!!
