Japan did invent drifting...at least as they practice it, on deserted city streets at night and on paved tracks. You could also say drifting was invented by USAC sprint cars, I guess...but thats dirt and different. One of the guys on a web site I used to frequent back in the late 90s learned drifting in Tokyo five years earlier from guys who had been doing it five years before that. Other than a four wheel drift in a nice neutral car on the track I don't think there was much drifting going on in the rest of the world back then.

Japan probably did invent the iPod...Steve Jobs probably ripped that idea off just like he stole the gui interface from Xerox.
Deserted city streets at night? What part of Japan are you talking about? I have been all over Japan and I have never seen less than Las Vegas at midnight traffic in all their cities! But maybe I missed a few. As for them taking the credit for alot of things. This is true! The very first in car cassette player was invented and patented at Montana State University and was later stolen by a student and sold to a small upstart Japanese company know as Sony Electronics! And as far as drifting goes, way back in the day when NASCAR was in its infant stages, they raced on dirt, mud, and sand tracks and all they did was drift into every turn. That is where the term Drift originated. It is not a Japanese word. In fact the Japanese word for drift is Kisuu, or sometimes called hyouryuu. Not trying to step on any toes, just trying to say that not every great thing comes from Japan. As for the iPod. It was modeled after an MP3 player from Creative Labs that was made in the mid 90's. Apple just did a great job of marketing it and turning it into a household name. I mean no one says " I want an MP3 player for x-mas!" Everyone want the iPod, even when they own a PC and there are far better matches for a PC.

Sorry for the long ass post!

Hahaha, hell yea!!!
My JDM LSD is not something anyone else is likely to see, so how does being JDM make it bling?

I STILL don't see the connection.

[QUOTE=neveronlines2k,Jul 11 2007, 06:10 PM] Actually I feel the opposite.

I see your point on the prices and all, but to me its about the car I drive, If I had a Mercedes or BMW I would sport most mods that originated in Germany or Europe, If I had a Dodge I would buy more Mopar or USDM parts. Since I drive a Honda I tend to buy parts that originated in Japan . To me it makes more sense.

I am not saying you cant find quality parts for Japanese cars in the US or Europe, but most of the best parts tend to come from the country of origin. However if I where to build my motor I would probably do it thru Hytech (they build quality parts that work ), instead of buying a J's or other JDM crate motor. Comptech also has some really nice parts.

It just seems there is more people who talk sh!t in the Honda and Acura forums about "JDM Bling" or thats "JDM tyte yo" and when you look at cars that everyone in the forums really like they all have a JDM theme (Tommy from Go Tuning, Kel's track car, both of Medical students cars, Diez's car etc)... I mean if you go to a Bimmer forum I doubt you will see many folks saying the AC Schnitzer kit is stupid, because its expensive or suggesting that someone buy a seibon hood over a Euro make

In the Honda seen there are lots of people who want to build cars and go after a certain look, but dont want to spend the money on high end parts to get the look they are after. Thats why company's like Rota, Shine, and others who make copy cat parts make so much $$$ (I am not saying any of the parts are junk or dont fit the way they should, just pointing out the way the US market is).

In Japan prices are more expensive and the people of Japan dont mind spending lots of $$$ on their hobby, while in the US everyone wants to build there cars for as little $$$ as possible.

I am generalizing based on what I have seen in the years I have been envolved with tuning imports (about 14yrs and counting), I am not trying to flame anyone or start an internet war

What a load of road apples!

Take a look at the cars in my signature photo. CCR has three Skylines, including Big Bird, and a wide-body S-15 Silvia, all real JDM products, so we don't have to build mock JDM cars to "impress people." Those stupid enough to think JDM is the be all and end all of automibiles can drool over the JDM cars all they like, but we own them, and other cars too, and go for the best parts, regardless of origin. Most JDM riceboys have trouble understanding how we can have cars like Big Bird and the Silvia (which is SCARY FAST!) and still prefer our USDM cars, but they only wonder that because they are ignorant and have bought into an untrue JDM myth.

If you think people select non JDM parts becaue they can't afford JDM parts then you are sadly mistaken.

[QUOTE=Marrk,Jul 14 2007, 12:42 PM]A) Anybody know with certainty the differences between OEM JDM spec and OEM US spec? Is there a fact sheet somewhere on line?

B) Mugen has an intimate connection with Honda? The guy used to work at Honda? The guy is a Honda?

C) When we are talking about JDM bling, we are talking about non-OEM JDM bling? (The clear running lights are OEM JDM, I assume.)

D) Is the US spec s2k a 50 state car?

E) That "Honda" side badge written in script is making me feel all tingly. For those like me who don't know, what's the provenance of that and where/how do you get 'em?

F) If you are a car guy or a motorcycle guy, a part of it goes beyond being reasonable. It's an emotional relationship. I shop with discretion for other things, but it makes me happy to, in certain cases, throw money at my vehicles. That said, the guys who want to get happy by powering up the s2k instead of enjoying the handling aspects are driving the wrong car.

Depends on the part for me. I won't buy a set of JDM headlights for $ when I can clear them. I'll buy whatever I like or whatever gives the most benefit. Just so happens thats JDM most of the time. I would never sling the term "JDM" around I could care less.
