Long wait is over
At last, my yellow 2002 is with me. It's been nine months of dreaming, reading s2ki.com, refraining from telling my girlfriend (surprise!), speculating what changes Honda will do, talking to dealers... now it's real. And it's awesome!!
The love affair started funny; when the car first came out in 2000, I stopped by a dealer in downtown Los Angeles, and after making me wait 20 minutes standing (dealership had no customers other than me - grrrr...) I was able to sit in the car (no test drive). I was dismayed when I figured out I did not fit (I am 6'1, ~185cm)
I eventually purchased an Audi 1.8T Quattro, modified the suspension, and started having fun driving in the canyons (safe). My friend with the NSX test drove an used S2000 from a dealer, and commented about it's lack of power.
But one day we decided to revisit the same dealer and checked out the car by myself. I did fit! The initial impression must have been a fluke (bad seat adjustment?). Then I took it to the canyons (Decker, very twisty), with my friend on the NSX following behind. It was sublime, and my friend told me he had trouble keeping up with me. I then figured out that his comment about the lack of power (torque) was because he did not rev-it up past 5000rpm during his test-drive...
It's still breaking in, but I love the rumbling exhaust sound when it revvs down from 5K to 4K; it is so addictive.
The only downside about the car is the cockiness of the Honda dealerships (within Los Angeles at least); I don't need to have a Cappuccino made as I enquire about the car, but I'd like to be able to order the car the way I want it without ridiculous surcharges (just the way I did with my Quattro). Same thing about Toyota dealers - another friend wanted to check-out a MR2 and the sales people ignored us for half an hour as we ate free popcorn and timed how long until we would get noticed.
The car is going to be great! Thanks to everybody for the helpful information found in this board.
Merry Christmas!
