Default Loose, distant steering.

I just took the car out for a spin today and noticed that the steering felt off. While the responses of this car are usually telepathic, today it felt like I was driving grandpa's buick: floaty and imprecise. My first thought was underinflated front tires, but I check them and they were fine. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? The car has 16,000 miles on it, no track time, and has been impecibly maintained.

Well, I don't know where you're located, but cold temps can really affect the way the tires perform. I'm guessing that's what you felt.

If it's not that, then perhaps your EPS unit was reset. Did you replace the battery or have it disconnected for a while? Although, I might be talking out my patootie on this issue, as I don't think resetting the EPS will cause it to be floaty at all... Not really sure. There is a "training" method for setting up the EPS, and maybe you'd want to try that.

I agree with you about the normal steering of the car being wonderful. It's my favorite part of the car. I hope you can get it back to perfection.

Oh, sorry caffeinated one.

EPS is the electronic power steering unit that drives the steering rack in the S. One of the very unique features of the S that I love.

I guess a quick sanity check... Is the "EPS" light on the dashboard staying on when you turn the key?

Sorry, I don't know what to suggest as I haven't had to do anything with the EPS system. Apparently, the steering unit itself doesn't think anything is wrong or it would flip the light on.

Other suspension/steering pieces that could go wrong would not do so "instantly" but would wear over time... Sorry.

Maybe this thread should go to the "under the hood" forum for more input.

Is the steering response same when you turn left/right? Does the steering feel worst in the straight ahead position i.e. when moving steering left/right from straight ahead?

What exactly is the tires pressure, front/rear?
