Default Maintenance Required light around 24k?

Howdy,

I was just wondering if anyone had their Maintenance Required light come on, and stay on, around 24k miles. I am just shy of 24k miles, and my light had been flashing on start-up lately. Today, however, it came on and has now stayed on. I know the light usually comes on a little before a scheduled maintenance interval, but isn't 24k miles too early for the 30k mile service??? If this is routine, I would like to avoid taking my car in to the dealer for it (thanks to this wonderful website, I know how to disable the light myself). But, if it is something serious (I highly doubt it), I'd hate to ignore it and suffer later on. My only thought is that I had the sparkplug TSB done at 20k miles, but I had approximately 3k miles with no light. Could one of the plugs be loose? If so, wouldn't the check engine light come on instead??? Thoughts?

Thanks for the input.

No one??? Slow day, I guess. You guys, and gals, are usually quicker with the 411.

The dealer may have forgotten to reset the indicator at a previous service visit...it doesn't stay solid until 7k miles (if memory serves), and the fact that it was flashing for a while just strengthens my belief that this is the case. Just reset it per the manual, and watch it over the next few miles...if it doesn't come back on, you're golden.

Dealer probably didn't reset it so you'd remember to change your oil.

As Mac says, it comes on every 7k not at the "Dealer" scheduled maintenance periods.

However, look up the faq in the library section of the site for the procedure for resetting the indicator, the manual is not 100% correct.

As a side note, I dont think the techs have ever once reset my indicator..

Wait!!! I have one more thing to add...just incase..remember to reset your indicator even if it isnt flashing before track days and such.

I was at the track once when it started blinking, took my attention away from the track, and scared the crap out of me!

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that it came on every 7k miles. Glad to hear that likely nothing is wrong, as I suspected. I'll reset it today. Thanks again!

LOL, I'm sorry MC, but that's too funny...i can see myself freaking out at that, too

Maybe I'm not reading the manual corrcetly, but when I follow the directions to reset the light in MY manual, it seems to work. I have a MY 2000, so don't think my manual is any different. Hmmm, that would be a first...reading an incorrect manual incorrectly and getting it right (is that like "two wrongs DO make a right"?)
