something's gotta be up cuz ive driven many different s2000 s and the shifter can never be described as smooth as a hot knife thru butter. let's talk about this. the shortshifter makes everything quite notchy. like flicking a resistant light switch.
Even with the stock shifter you can feel what the transmission is doing, and the PRSS is even more positive in its feedback. Stock or RPSS, if you time the shifts right they're both quick and smooth, and the extra feedback of the RPSS should make that easier.

BTW, you slightly modified what I said. You added the word "smooth" to a statement that was intended to refer to speed (so it doesn't quite fit).
You should feel some "snicks" and some variable resistance during a shift; That's what tells you what's going on inside the gearbox. The shift motion itself may or may not be smooth, depending on the situation.

If we were just talking about your car, rather than all S2000s, I'd ask you how long it's been since you changed the transmission oil, but it doesn't make sense that every S2000 you've driven would be past due for a change. Maybe we're feeling the same things, but for some reason we're interpreting what we're feeling in quite different ways; Or perhaps we're feeling different things due to different driving styles. I really don't know. If you lived a little closer we could get together, drive around a little, and probably figure it out, but I'm on the opposite coast.

if my car's warmed up, everything feels fine...no notchy. If i've been pushing the car hard, the shifts get even smoother.

if my shifts aren't smooth, it's my fault.

i'm using gm synchromesh fluid
My experience has been the same, not only with my car, but with other S2000s I've driven.

I'm running Honda MTF and an RPSS, and frankly I could not ask for anything more in the way of a shifter.

Are you fully depressing the clutch when you shift?

hmm, i suppose its possible that ive destroyed my synchros, but like ive said, every s that ive driven feels notchy and mechanical. the shortshifter makes it even more so. my car only has 33k on it and i think the tranny fluid has already been flushed at least once. its like i can feel the metal connecting when i shift.

thank you mx5 for helping.

Perfectly normal.. and I feel it more so now with my Voodoo shift knob. I think it's a good thing If you're overly concerned about it, try switching to synchromesh FM tranny fluid. It makes a difference, particularly when your tranny is cold
