It was bought privately as-is. I was hoping I could get at least 20k miles out of the motor, but with the noise I have doubts unless I can prevent it from breaking. I don't think the lemon law applies to privately sold vehicles in Tennessee. I'm not worried about returning it anyway, I knew what I was getting myself into when buying it! Everything is sold right now, only the noise kind of worries me.

Regardless of how good the deal was, you need to get the code read. If you are ok driving it a short distance (no flashing CEL), take it to AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts to get the code read. If you have some money, get a code reader yourself as it is not expensive and very useful. Once you know what the code is, you can diagnose the issue and figure out a fix. This may alleviate the issues you are having now and it may not as the noise you hear may not be related to the CEL (for instance, the CEL could be due to a TP with no CEL fix that the previous owner reset temporarily - you can pull the fuse and the CEL will reset and not come back on for a few miles, happens to me - while the noise could the the TCT that is common in our vehicles).
Start at step one and figure out the CEL and then move on from there.
A video would help as well as someone here might know what the issue is base don the noise.

If the previouse owner had no idea why his engine began ticking badly when it got hot, he may have decided the problem could cost him 2-3k so he took it off the asking price. Now the new owner can replace the TCT for $100 and enjoy the vehicle. And i'd say its hard selling any car with over 150k let alone an s2k

From the videos I've watched that's exactly what it is, the part is ordered. Thanks a lot! Looks like it'll need some oil too, the guy before me clearly didn't take care of it. Fortunately he only had it for 10k miles. The Carfax shows that the previous owner brought it to the dealership religiously. I'd imagine you can't do too much damage with 10k miles of neglect.
