Thanks for all the responses...well, it happened again today -- of course I had not read all your insightful replies then... I guess the problem is that I had assumed that it was warmed up since it was during lunch and so it had only been a few hours since last I drove it but I know better now and I'll always look for the 3 bars before punching it.

BTW: So what would the technical reason for this be...is it the computer kicking in the rev-limitter...just as it happens at redline?
