Default MY05 Center Console Cup Holder Set Problem

UGH!

So, I noticed early last year (2008) sometime, that my center console cup holder, sliding door, just stopped retracting all on it's own one day... Went to press the button, and usually it would shoot back into it's little hiding slot under the arm rest, like Star Trek or something crazy.. and now, well, I press the release button, and I have to slide it back on my own.

Originally, I had assumed it was from so many coffee and drink spills in the cup holder area, the sliders probably just became gunked up over time..

Sooooo, last weekend, I decided to tear apart the whole Cup Holder assembly and clean everything down completely.. Using toothpicks, Xacto's, and cotton swab q-tips.. Still hasn't solved the problem.. It's MUCH smoother, and almost back to normal now, as far as the operation of the sliding door, goes.. BUT, still no retracting back, shooting under the arm rest action... lol

I REALLY don't want to fork out $180ish for a brand new cup holder assembly, and I cannot find a sub-assembly drawing or exploded view diagram of the cup holder slider assembly for any other part numbers or part descriptions... I'm trying to find if there was a spring in there, or if that little geared wheel that's hidden underneath, could actually have had a spring-like function before, and maybe just over time, stopped working.

Does anyone have any insight on this.. Here I am a bloody mechanical engineer, and I'm out of ideas. lol.

Your guys' help would be much appreciated!

Thanks ya'll

There is a spring. It's a wound ribbon of silver metal. One end is probably detached. I accidentally did this myself one time and had to reattach it.

Thanks for your reply.. Well, during my removal, disassembly, and cleaning of the whole assembly, I never found a spring one. That was actually the whole focus, was to dismantle everything to find if a spring had come detached some how...

To my dismay, not one spring or anything was found... Not in the assembly, nor laying below in the transmission tunnel.

Pics, diagrams, or part numbers would help MUCH guys! Thanks!

^Thanks for the e-mail J5sense.. Unfortunately, that isn't the spring for the cup holder slider assembly. That's the spring for the cup holder divider arm... ugh!

Thanks for trying tho man!! I really appreciate your help..

Any other takers????? lol

I'm having the same problem with my cup holder door. I took it all apart, cleaned the channels and the door edges. The door is smoother, but what's slowing it down is that plastic gear. I can't find a listing for the part anywhere! The back of the gear says "NF5 058A". When I remove the gear, the door flies back. So, I guess the gear is there to keep the door from doing that, but it's working too well! I tried cleaning it out, using WD40, even some shin etsu silicone grease. I don't see an easy way to take the gear apart either, so I'm stumped...

Anyone found a resolution to this problem? Mine is either going to slow or stopping completely. I have taken it all apart and cleaned everything, but the only thing that is going to solve this is either a slightly higher tension spring to over power the gear/sprocket or a gear with less friction to allow the spring to do it's job. I'd prefer a faster gear, but have no idea where to find one and would be happy either way.
