Default Need help: Import my S2K from Germany to the US

Hi guys !
I will relocate from Germany to Detroit, MI, in January 2003. And I don't wanna leave my S2K behind, of course. So I 'm looking for the following information:
companies, that are dealing with car shipping
modifications to be done prior to registration in the US
where to go for registration
how much will it cost

If there is anyone out here who has gone through this "project" before I would appreciate any advice.

Let it rev !
Uwe

Hi OOH-VAE,

So you're going to my old stomping ground!!

I did the vice-versa trip and found out that it is far more easy to take a car back to Europe, than to import one in the USA, however, it *can* be done... I suppose...

My suggestion however is to sell the car and buy a new one in Detroit.

Where are you going and what will you be doing over there?

Hi Siepel,

Detroit is also my old stomping ground. I have already lived there from 1998 to 2000. I 'll be working for TRW in Washington township and I 'm planning to live in the Troy/Royal Oaks area.
How much did you pay to ship your baby back to the Netherlands ?

You will likely have a lot of trouble importing your S2k. I looked into this a while back because the prices in europe were so much lower than those here in the US. I called around to some different importing companies and found that unless your make and model of vehicle is on the allowable entry list, they wouldn't let you bring it in for conversion. This was about 8 months ago, so I suppose that things might have changed. When I checked, the s2000 was not on the list and the only way to put it there was to spend a few thousand dollars to push it through the red tape. Good luck with it!

I agree with siepel, sell your car then buy a new one when your in the states. You might enjoy the cruise control. Unless your car is monte carlo blue, bring it here!

Thanks to all of you for your replies !

lvs2k, your link is a good source. Unfortunately it clearly shows that there is no chance that I can bring my car to the US What a bummer ! So I have to sell my baby. And November is propably the worst month to sell a convertible in Germany. Wish me luck guys.
