Official Is This Car Worth It Thread vol 3
Looking for thoughts on a 2003 GPW:
64k miles
Clean Carfax
No mods ever
8/10 VINs, but not due to vehicle-induced damage. Bottom of front bumper has seen a lot of pavement.
PPI'd and mechanically needed a few fixes but nothing too bad.
Interior looks like a 7.5/10.
Multiple obvious patches on soft top. Will need to replace sooner or later.
Owner says he doesn't need to sell and wants $15k. My heart says yeah maybe but my mind's like 'are you sure you'd be okay with all that?' so I just wanted to run it by you guys...

I paid $12.5k last Nov. for a Sebring on full red at 65k that had 7/10 vins and one accident on the (clean) title but had an inspection done that confirmed no frame damage and OEM replacements used. Otherwise it sounds like in similar condition to the one you’re looking at. The accident gave me pause when buying but I have no regrets, I love the car to death, and aim never selling. I’m planning on installing a rollbar to be eligible for more track events and the fact that it’s not perfect makes that decision a bit easier. I don’t think $15k for GPW with that mileage and condition around here would seem high for a driver around here but inventory is low (Portland, OR).
$15k sounds a bit high to me, but it depends on what your plans for the car are. If it is going to be a weekend fair weather only driver, I think you are better off spending $20k for a mint one, as it will more than likely remain mint due to the very little usage and when the time comes to part ways, you won't loose anything. If you plan on making it your daily, then yeah, get something a bit more beat up and go nuts.
Thanks for everyone's input. I plan to use it as a short-distance summer daily so I don't need a mint car, just something stock with a clean history. It's just that given that it's missing VINs and needs to new top and front bumper I know 15k is on the high side - I was just on the fence as to whether it's too high.
I've been looking for an AP1v2 in the NY Metro area for three years and still haven't found the right one so I've been getting a little impatient...this car is actually out in Georgia, where I have some friends who could help with the logistics, but I'd need to have it shipped as well. Throwing money at problems does tend to solve them though, so maybe I should just do it.
