Thankfully, it sounds like the passenger is going to be OK, and no one else was involved in the accident.

LAGUNA BEACH (CBSLA.com) — One person was killed and five injured in a five-vehicle crash that shut down Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach for hours.
The crash happened about 1:30 p.m., causing authorities to advise motorists to avoid the area near Crystal Cove State Park, the reports said.
The five survivors were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to severe.
The crash occurred near Irvine Cove Way.
Greg Mills, reporting for CBS2, said two of the injured were in critical condition.
Sky 2 reported a car was out-of-control and swerved into another lane and then broadsided on the passenger side by a pickup truck.
Laguna Beach Police, CHP and Irvine Police were all investigating, Mills said.
Mills also reported several of the victims had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.

... "The crash began when the male driver of a Honda sedan going northbound hit a car going in the same direction, Kravetz said. Police are not sure whether the car was to the side or in front of the Honda.
The Honda driver then hit more cars when he veered into the southbound lanes, either because of the first crash or an overcorrection, Kravetz said.
A passenger in the Honda was declared dead at the scene. The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. He is expected to survive, Kravetz said. The four others injured in the crash suffered minor to severe injuries.
The passenger who died has not been identified, Kravetz said. Identities of the others involved also were not released."

It's very sad that the passenger was killed, but I'm surprised the driver survived that crash based on the bottom picture.

It seems foolish to lose control on what looks to be a well traveled street road-definitely the wrong place to test out the performance capabilities.

Agreed....*IF* that is what happened. As always, I feel it's very important to avoid a rush to judgement, and particularly in instances where we are not witnesses.

Very tragic death, and the driver has lost a friend in a manner for which he will possibly feel responsible even if he was not at fault.

According to one of the news articles I read, there were reports that the driver had a minor fender bender and then over-corrected and lost control.

Fatal accident near the Gorge between Washington/Oregon. Car got squished by apparently going over center line and hitting oncoming truck. Apologize for the crappy resolution--stole it from the site.

RIP

It's still remarkable to me how safe this car is, it seems that all the fatal accidents would have had a good chance of being fatal even if the driver had been in a more normal car.
