Oil Consumption rate?
To anybody that never used to check the engine oil, like my self, I never knew that I have to wipe off the dip stick first time I pull it out, wipe it off, and then dip it again. The second dip, or third, is the accurate one.
So, at the beginning, I just pulled the stick out, read, and put it back, never seen it drop. A month later I finally got my manual, I knew I was wrong, so I ran out and check my oil. What I found was I had almost nothing left on the dip stick!
I've been lurking on this board for quite some time before I bought the car, read lots of post about oil consumption of this car, but I'd never seen anyone mention this. May be it's a simple, A-B-C kindda thing that everyone knows, and may be I was stupid too. But, after some people said they never seen any oil level drop on their dip stick, I just like to emphasize that if you read only the first pull, you are gonna get the wrong reading, be careful!!!!!
I don't think anyone here stupid like I was, though! Just double check

Are you guys noticing oil leaks under your car or is the car literally eating it?

i also want to point out that if your engine doesn't consume oil at all, it does not automatically make it a better motor(such as higher hp, better MPG).

My Prelude is sipping it and burning it. I've got not a drop of leak under the car. My driveway is sqeuaky clean. If I drive 1000 or 2000 miles around town, I never burn a drop. On the highway at 75 mph all day, I don't burn oil. Who drives 75 in Wyoming and Montana? Only nuns. At 90 mph, I have to add 1/2 to 1 quart of oil at just about every gasoline fill up
.........
And since those are states with relatively small Catholic populations,.....
However, it is interesting that you note that somewhat higher speeds do make a big difference in the oil consumption rate. Now that I am close to 11,000 miles, the oil consumption is down a bit, but still seems to be in the neighborhood of 3000 miles per quart. That is with relatively little driving above 70 mph. However, the consumption is nonlinear, and thus bears watching. I do measure carefully and consistently, but there will be longish periods when the oil level virtually remains constant, and then it will suddenly drop a couple of "X's" in several hundred miles. Checking after every fillup remains an absolute mandate. And even after an hour or two, the handle on that dipstick is hot enough to burn the fingers. No other car I have ever owned transfers so much heat to the dipstick.
