Parking: Top Up or Down?
I will put the top up if I am leaving the car for more than a few minutes in a public place. In general, one should put the top up, even if you are on a street or in a driveway around here; there is too much chance of a sudden thunderstorm.
For the next couple of weeks, top down is going to be very minimal, since this is the notorious 'pine pollen' season in the South Carolina low country, and everything gets covered with that fine yellow dust. I have the good fortune to have a garage, so the top can often be left down overnight in the garage.
I have no use for that weird device known as a boot cover. That will remain pristine for the next owner.

These comments validated my feeling about putting the top up when parked. I'm just not willing to risk a massive overflight of birds or anything else.
As an aside, I went to the grocery store yesterday and parked at the far end of the lot, top up. When I came out about 30 minutes later, I found parked next to me a brand new red Miata and a brand new red Boxster, both with their tops down.
The Miata looked very nice, and the red was quite vibrant. The Boxster's red seemed washed out, not as intense as the Miata or the S2000. I found it to be inferior in appearance to the other two.

If it breaks during the first 5 years the warranty or extended warranty will have to cover it.
Last summer I visited a friend at his ocean side home (no parking) and we walked a couple blocks to see his new Ferrari. I forget the model, but the price tag is around $200,000. Imagine my shock to see it parked at the curb, with dozens of tourists walking by and gawking, and the top is down! He had even left a camera on the floor. That's trusting your fellow man. Never heard him complain of damage or vandalism. yet.
