Are the prices for S2000s out of control?
I know bone stock is bone stock...period... You shouldn't be able to say bone stock and have all sorts of footnotes and exceptions...
That said, my car's only modification is swapping out the speakers and the headunit...
Do you think that folks looking for bone stock would consider a car with the headunit and speaker replaced? I am not talking about any speaker boxes and subwoofers and newly drilled holes in the door panel for mid-range drivers... Simple speaker swap...simple headunit swap...
Honestly, the stock stereo is crap... The only reason I could see someone demanding the OEM stereo is if they wanted a clinically stock car...period...
How do you think this sort of "mod" would impact resale?

This is not a matching numbers Hemi Cuda. Originality down to the correct OEM stereo will have little impact on the value. Just like cars, the are certain modifications that have more universal desirability than others.
In the case of swapping out the stock radio for a new head unit, hanging on to the stock one and offering it to the new owner should be fine. I'd recommend doing that with any parts that are changed out (intake, exhaust, etc) so the new owner can return to to "bone stock" if they desire--I would bet it'll be worth much more that way.

I think decent deals are still out there, but you have to be very lucky to find a great deal these days as most sellers are aware of the S2000 market.
There are not as many S2000's in Canada as the US, and I looked for quite a while before I found a bone stock, adult owned, 1 owner car. I ended up paying $22,800 US ($27,000 CAD) for a 2009 with 13,000 miles (20,000 KM's). Chicane Silver over black was my least favorite color combo, but I was getting anxious to buy something and wasn't sure when the next fair deal would pop up. Also, it wasn't easy finding a car that was completely bone stock. Most cars had some mods which didn't interest me.

Buy the the car because it makes you happy, not as an investment. When you're 70 years old telling your grandkids about it, do you think they'll care that you sold it for 14.6% more than you paid for it? Or would they rather see all the pictures and cool adventures you had with your car?
