rained on by salt

Bad luck man! Reason #1 that I never stay behind any truck for more than a couple seconds.
I have a hard time believing that road salt can chip windshield glass, usually that is caused by tiny pebbles and quartz based sand kicked up by tires.

Being behind them is not good and being beside them is even worse. Remember all the tire treads that litter the Hwys and know that these treads come from trucks. If you happen to be beside one when a tread is thrown off and hits your car, I guarantee some damage. We all have to go around them though and I suggest you break the speed limit doing so. Limits the time beside them and lessens the chance you'll be beside them when they blow.
I understand your frustration. I drive 35 miles each way to work. About 20 miles of that is on a 4 lane divided highway, 65 mph speed limit, and it used to have a gravel shoulder. I dont mean 3ft of paved shoulder and then gravel; I mean highway, painted line, 6 inches (maybe), gravel. A semi gets one side off in the gravel and rocks were flying everywhere. You would think you were far enough back, but things were still hitting you. Fortunately this highway has been improved so it is not an issue anymore. However I drove it this way in my EP3 for years, and it has rock chips all over the front end.
