Amazing how a guy comes and asks a innocent question and people flame him for buying a certain model. While I agree with some of you, and I would never buy a CR because of its lack of a soft top its his car and his question wasnt " Hey is it smart to go on a road trip with no top?" so quit offering your worthless opinions which are irrelevant to the original question asked here.

Get some seat locks if your staying overnight, try that umbrella top thing which is pretty cheap and find a hotel with good lighting and preferably covered parking and most of all, enjoy the trip.

30 posts later, and finally a good answer for the guy.
I have a cr as well, and have taken it on a couple trips. Going to homecoming and san francisco, I kept the top on, due to being overnight for more than a few days, possibility of weather, and shadiness of neighborhoods.
I have taken the top off and gone to el centro for the night, which is about two hours away, but there is no chance for rain. I wouldn't go for more than a couple days without the top unless I will be parked in a well lit garage area at whatever hotel I am at. You have to also consider stopping at resturants and such, plenty of time for someone to climb into your car and get whatever they need. Without the top, it doesn't look suspicious for someone to just climb into the car.
I have the california pop top that I put on the car when I don't have the top on, it protects it from bird poo, sun damage, and the light shower, but I wouldn't trust it for a downpour. All the water pools in the middle of the cover, and taking the cover off, it spills into the seats unless you are very careful with someone helping you.
When I leave the car with the top off overnight, I have a locking car cover, its about as much protection as a soft top I would assume.

Like others have said, if a thief wants to get your junk, he is going to get it. But, at least with a soft top, if there is a witness, they may call the cops when someone is slicing the top, but if they are just jumping over the car door, it doesn't look strange.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will buy some seat locks, a Cali Pop Top, and be cautious where I park it if/when I stop. I am not planning cross country trips or anything to crazy. Just some aimless driving and some photography journeys. I bought the car to drive and for me the only proper way to drive it is top off.

I am not to worried about people giving worthless opinions, it always happens on forums.

Thanks for the solid and useable advice though.

Long ago (you'll know , in a sec) I wanted to take a cross country trip on a new Kawasaki GPz1100. It was the first year it was fuel injected (now you know). I could have driven, flown, etc., but I wanted to take the bike and enjoy the journey. Everyone told me about how sport bikes were stolen from motels and campsites along interstates, how dangerous it is to ride at night or through long stretches of empty back roads, etc. Had I listened, I would have missed out on one of the best times of my life! Take your CR and do what makes you feel good and enjoy the trip!

Everybody in this thread is posting what THEY would do based on what THEY have been exposed to. In all honestly, I see no problem with it, I used the leave the top down on my Wrangler for weeks at a time (i know, I know it was designed for it), but if you have a decently nice place to keep the car at night, I wouldn't worry. I've driven with the top down in the rain many times, it's not really that bad unless you're going under 45 or 50 or so - the worst part is the water that drips over the window (obviously, when it's raining, you go top down, windows up).

Cars are meant to be driven, not babied. Do it, take pics, and make a nice write up.

Nice post Eric

I've done a trip or two without the hardtop, through snow no less.

Honestly though, seat locks are a good idea, if you have an alarm, add the proximity sensor with an on off switch, park with the windows up, lock the glove box and have fun

Being in Oregon, I don't do it often because of rain, but something that I've always thought of (thankfully never happened) was bird droppings onto the seats and interior. That would not be fun.

You might get a few more CR specific answers posting this up in the CR thread ^^

My wife screams any time a seagull flies over my car and we got the top off.
