Today I got a rockchip on my windshield the size a lil smaller than a penny when I was going to work. It is the first time it ever happens to me and of course it pisses me so much because I hecka baby it since I bought it 3 months ago. Anyways, I have no idea what I should do now. It didn't crack the windshield but only created a very swallow hole on it. some very thin pieces of glasses came off and I couldn't feel it from the inside of the windshield. so what's the next step? filling it? where should i take it to?

 

call your insurance company, I know mine will come to you and fill it in for free.

 

I had this happen a few weeks ago ... small chip (loud hit though) and a little spidering, but all smaller than a quarter.

The guy who came the next day to do the repair work said fixing it immediately is best to keep road dust/grime out of the hole. Once it's in there, it will remain discolored after it's filled.

Some insurances will waive the deductible for a chip repair (instead of replacing the whole windshield). unfortunately, my company dropped that clause in Sep-06. The repair was only $50, so no sweat. Had the chip been in my line of sight rather than in the upper left corner, the ins co would have replaced the whole glass.

You won't feel the little cracks on the inside because there are two panes of glass. Only the outer pane has the chip. If your chip is not in your line of sight, call a local glass co that does windshield repair. Ask your insurance company if they have a list of recommended service providers, and if they will cover the cost/waive your deduct. Today would not be too soon, before the chip decides to run.

 

My insurance company sent Safelite to my place to fix the crack. It cost me nothing. The repair guy said it needs to be done immediately to prevent the crack from getting worse. The repair is guaranteed for the life of the windshield. I hope yours is as simple as that.

 

Depending on the size you can get just it filled at a glass shop. Whatever those places are that sell windshields. I have filled 3 or 4 over the summers time. $10/repair (give or take)

Be aware you need to get it worked on asap so it doesnt continue to crack across the entire windshield.

 

Thanks for the advices guys. I called up my insurance but unfortunately they dont waive deductible or cover the cost of the chip repair unless i pay my deductible which is $500 in my case. so i decided to go with Safelite for $50 even tho I have to pay for it myself but they are coming to my work place tomorrow to fix it, I hope it is not too late. there goes my $50.. just my luck.

Just one day should not be a problem unless your drive home was over rough roads with lots of vibration on the glass ... another thing to consider is if you expect a big temp swing between daytime/nighttime, could also cause some additional stress until it's fixed. You might want to find a garage if you can to park it overnight.

Good luck ... you'll always see a little dot from the impact, but you won't have to worry about it spreading afterwards.

 

Yeah so today the guy from safelite called me up and said he was there to fix my windshield. it was only 8am! he was there even before I got to work. He told me he needed to drill the broken part out and fill it in and I would have a one in a thousand chance to have a cracked windshield during the process. I was a lil worried there for a second. but it turned out to be fine, there is a noticeable spot on it , it is not even flush with the surrounding glass and I can totally feel the hole with my finger but they garrantee a lifetime warranty on it so we will see.

 

Well sooner or later you'll have the stars in daylight. I have like a billion now that is annoying. (I'm refering to the micro sports from the million mini rocks that hits mine.)

 

$0 deductile on glass replacement through insurance is a good way to go. It will take like 10 years in premiums for me to equal the cost of a single windshield
