I prefer to check the oil cold, in the morning, after the engine has been sitting for a long, long time. That is the truest gauge of oil levels as its all settled in one place. Cold to hot, oil levels don't change much, certainly not enough to matter, but oil is all over the place, so you're not getting as accurate a reading hot.

Ok Julie, I have to ask, what's wrong with Mobil 1 ?

Have you noticed the engine sits at an angle?

I check my oil when it is cold too, after it has sat for a couple of days and on a flat surface. I havent driven mine for a week, gotta go check it now actually.

Only the Mobil 1 0W-40 is truely Synthentic group 4 base stock oil. The other weights are dino oil that has been processed, yet can be legally (in the US) called 'Synthetic'. Mobil 1 is still good oil, but I can see how people would have issues with using it in high performance engines (high revving, turbo, etc). There are some other things people don't like about the 'other' weight Mobil 1 oils. But the M1 0W-40 is Good Stuff, but not really the right weight for S2000 (used a lot in Euro cars though).

There's nothing wrong with it generally speaking, it just isn't very good for S2000s, especially AP1s. Do a search for "Mobil1" in the Under The Hood section to read all about how it's linked to premature wear of timing chain tensioners (TCTs) and seems to get consumed faster than other oils.

If you try again they'll eventually match. Or you can go by the lower one.

Some people notice that Mobil1 burns off in the S2000 engine, especially the F20. Some other people swear by the oil.

My advice is buy oil that is within spec, and you'll be fine. I personally buy whatever oil is on sale, change oil and OEM filter each 7.5k mi, and all my used oil analyses have shown nothing bad.
