depends on where you look, one of my books shows:

348 is 3.4 litre, 10.4:1 compression, 300hp @ 7200 (another shows 330hp) , 5 speed, 3062 curb weight
348 speciale 310 hp
348 spider 310 hp 0-60 5.3 sec 171 top end, 3252 curb weight

f355 3.5 litre, 5 valve per cylinder, 11.0:1 compression, 375hp @ 8250, 6 speed, 2976 curb weight, 0-60 4.6 secs, 183 top end

355 has a better aero and suspension package, styling changes, etc., but a similar shape.

on average, figure no more than 2-3k miles a year for a "average" price, lower mileage is higher premium, higher mileage lowers price, and without documented maintenance records, at or below low end of the scale.

unless it is an older/rare car with an accident that you want to buy to restore, getting one with an accident record is not going to be cost effective.

recent Cavallino buyers guide lists:
1975-77 gtb 30-55k
1977-80 gts 25-35k
1980-82 gtbi 22-30k
1980-82 gtsi 22-32k
1982-85 308gt qv 30-37k
1982-85 308 gts qv 30-45

1985-89 328 gts 35-55k
1985-89 328 gts 35-62k

1989-94 348TB 40-65k
1989-94 348 ts 45-70k
1992-93 348 speciale 60-95k
1993-95 348 spider 60-90k
1993-94 348 gtb 50-65k
1993-94 348gts 60-75k

355's will all be > 90k

if you have a clean driving record, there are several specialty companies that will insure a 360 for between 1800-2500 a year with limited, pleasure only driving, no track events, races, etc.

i have a couple of speeding tickets, they care not that they are from a lowly honda, so i am paying considerably more (7400 a year for both cars!!) with a regular company (progressive) for the next year when 2 of them drop off and i can switch over to another insurance company.

i bought it.

do not think you can lease one.

they did have an odd program on the f50's that i think was a lease. purpose was to have all the original owners keep the car for the first couple years, then have them all available at same time to buy themselves, or sell to others. idea was to cut down on the speculation buy to sell at inflated prices that was seen when the f40's came out.

Ferrari's are certainly full of passion, but by no means practical. I always thought I would buy a nice used one as soon as I was done with grad school, but I have decided I will probably wait until I can afford a brand new one. If I had the money now, I'd order a new 8-cylinder Ferrari every other year, and that way I'd keep each one about 18 months or so until there is only about 6 months left on the warranty.

For the past several years, new 8-cylinder Ferraris have not depreciated during the warranty period. So in other words, with the exception of the regular maintenence (not cheap, but not enough to kill you) and the initial outlay of $160k or so, you drive a new Ferrari for free.

Obviously the buy-in is a hurdle, but Ferrari's aren't for everyone

warranty is 3 year, not sure if it is just the 360, or all models. they have also just started something with an extended warranty, but i am not sure what that covers, it can be bought up until the time the normal warranty expires.

there is usually not a lot of improvements year over year within a specific model. there were things like changing from triple weber carbs to fuel injection on the 308, then going to 4 valve per cylinder on the last year or two. 348's made some changes to address issues (changed designation from tb/ts to gtb/gts). i do not think the current year 360 has any major change from when it first came out. they did make a 348 series speciale that incorporated some things they were gearing up for the 355, and they just came out with the 360 stradale that incorporates a lot of the challenge series (race only) mods in a street legal car.

if you were just changing to the same model, newer year, i do not think you will see that much change maintenance costs and such, but you will make the sales peolpe happy with all the commissions.....

what some people do is put their names/deposit on the 1st year of the "next" model so that when it is announced they can take it if they like the figures, or remove their name if it does not appeal to them.

i worked my way up... 308 @ 30k car loan, trade in at 30k for 328 plus 30k car loan, uhm, next was sidestep due to market losses... sell the house/move plus a 32k car loan to get the 360.

nothing says you have to jump right in at the newest/most expensive models. get an older/less expensive/well maintained model and use it for awhile. if the experience makes you feel good, upgrade as you can afford. if you feel the mystique is nothing but magazine writers hype and other owners needing to gush about it to justify throwing away their money, sell it and go another route.

i always say that if you cannot enjoy and have fun driving your car when there is no one else around, you have the wrong car.

Get whatever your heart tells you to get. But if you buy a Ferrari, make sure you have the means to keep it on the road. These are not cheap cars to own.
