The S2000 Is Not A Collector Car
After looking for a year- this is my conclusion....
KBB/NADA prices reflect the price of a year make model S with certain mileage that has been completely beat on......
After going to look at - well at least 20 S2000s I finally gave in and overpaid for a clean example
As these cars get older- clean examples will start to dissapear
I cant tell you how many "garage kept babies" I went to go look at that had poorly rolled fenders, were obviously beat on- balding rear tires- paint was a mess- interior had never been cared for-
Or my favorite- the cars obviously modified and thrown back to stock poorly (I am pretty sure stock S2000 exhaust systems were completely crooked from the factory- if they couldnt even take the time to put the exhaust back on straight- what other short cuts were taken???)
I paid 20K for an 06 with 50K miles with a brand new top and new tires- 100% clean car fax with 2 previous owners-
Yes I overpaid- but I dont care- I looked at enough of them to know the car was cleaner then most

I consider that a deal!!! I overpaid also - $28k for a 2001!!!
2. My son bought an 04 last August with 77k miles, perfect shape, owner here on the forum; he paid $16k, a fair price.
3. So, yours is 2 years newer; to me that is worth $1k per yr. so = $2k more.
4. Yours has 27k miles less, and to me it is worth about a $1k more per less 10k miles in comparing 2 cars, so = $2,700 more.
5. His car: $16k + $2k (yours 2 yrs. newer) + 2.7k (your with less mileage = $20,700.
6. So, based on my figuring (open to question but works for me), you did fine!
I paid 27K for my yellow 2009 with 31K miles. Truly perfect, stock condition. One owner, no teenagers, always garaged, etc, etc. There were 38 of those sold in the US for 09 (not counting the 8 CRs) I would pay it again. I knew I would never see one EXACTLY what I wanted in that condition with those low miles.
I ran that by American Collectors link via USAA and they said I qualify for the car to be insured as a collectors car. They pay the agreed on price (we tossed out $28K as a start for grins and giggles) so in the event of a hull loss, I get that minus a deductible of about $1500. There is no depreciation per se. That is all the comprehensive, medical, loss per accident, the works for $1170/year.
Some qualifications include you must have at least one other DD, (I have 2) must be garaged, cannot exceed 7500 miles a year, no track, no racing, drive only for pleasure and or to meets/events, perfect driving record for 3 years, driving at least 5 years, and a few other things. Alarms are not required. Here is some more info:
Agreed value insures your vehicle for its specific value, at the time the policy is purchased. Collector value is based on the condition and rarity of the vehicle, as well as any special features. With this coverage, should your collector car be stolen or totaled, you are guaranteed the full insured amount. If the vehicle isn't a new model, then the agreed value is based on industry guides.
In contrast, if your collector car is insured with a standard "actual cash value" auto policy and your car is stolen or totaled, you would not receive collector value, but rather the replacement cost minus depreciation.
For example, if your 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible was insured for the agreed value of $30,000 and it was stolen, you'd get $30,000 minus your deductible. If you insured the same car for just its actual cash value, payment would be less and would equal replacement cost minus depreciation.
Pretty cool. Had not even thought of this till yesterday.
