I don't think of it either way. It's in its own class.

@ ~+$30K, if the S2000 was released today would probably have at least smart keyless entry, more airbags, updated gauge cluster (electro-luminescent), bluetooth, and VSA for all cars not just 06+ AP2's.

The engine tech would be upgraded as well. Direct-injection, better MPG, etc.

That being said, it still feels much better than getting into A LOT of other cars that debuted in the early 2000's. Some cars clearly age much better than others.
I'd be surprised if they added all those luxury features to a car that was designed to be a 'pure' and 'simple' drop top sports car.

None of those are "luxury features."

A 2013 Honda Accord EX (out-the-door @ ~$24k) has a blind spot camera, rear-view camera, smart keyless, bluetooth, added airbags, direct injection, VSA, sunroof, trip computer. And those features are also abundant on other cars ~$20k. If "pure" and "simple" doesn't mean lack of equipment.

If a 2013 S2000 rolled off the assembly line exactly the same as in 2008 and costed the same, I'd be surprised. S2000 is still nice, but it's not new.

Talking about 2000 era designs and lasting the test of time.
I saw a 2000-ish Mercedes SLK320 today. Back when they were new I liked them, however, today it just looked dated. Big, rounded and bloated.

Certainly in terms of driving feel, control feel, philosophy, etc, the S2000 is very much a 1990's Honda. My 03 Accord V6 is clearly the product of a different company than my "newer" 06 S2000. Priorities at Honda had started to shift towards space, refinement, lower control effort. My Accord still hussles properly but it does it with a greater feeling of vehicle weight and control isolation than the Hondas that came before it (including Accords). The S2000 was a relic of old Honda even by the time it was first introduced. The driving experience has more in common with my 91 Accord than my 03 Accord.

I think its all about perspective and who's making the call. I just picked up a 2001 in nearly mint condition. My neighbor, who barely knows how to start his own car, thought it was a brand new BMW. I later drove over to my parents (who are definitely more car savvy than my neighbor - but nothing like people who post on these forums) - also thought it was new (but at least knew is was a Honda:-). They were shocked when I told them is was 12+ years old.

I like to think the S2000 in the same class as the NSX to car enthusiasts...it's one of the special hondas. You see one drive by you have to stop and appreciate it.
