When crusing down a hill with your AC on and no throttle, I heard you're getting "free AC" ?

True?
True. When you are in gear and off throttle the engine is essentially being run by the drivetrain! When you are off throttle and engine braking the fuel injectors are not firing so you are getting 1,000,000 mpg at that moment and the AC compressor is running off the free turning engine.

Sure would be nice if they engineered that BMW feature into the S. A/C compressor turns off when going WOT, sure would be nice...

since were on the subject, Ive heard that turning the a/c off before shutting the engine off increases the life expectancy of the compressor, is that true? my ac is always off before engine

I use A/C in my car maybe 2 times a year. I have a high tolerance for heat and humidity growing up in Houston, TX. Unless it's over 95 with high humidity my windows or top are down, A/C off.
Cool story bro

I couldn't agree more. And given how much I need to use the AC here in NC it'll probably be one of the reasons I don't hold onto this car more than a few years. Nothing like flooring it in 1st gear from a rolling 5mph start and having "nothing" happen
I think the AC does turn off when you "floor it"

Im assuming you're feeling the lack of the mighty 2.0's torque... if you wanna scoot at 5mph in 1st gear, clutch in, rev up, pop clutch & HANG ON.

Yeah all cars definitely are slower with AC on. My old DSM with built engine for some reason felt like a TON of power was robbed when the AC was on. Felt a huuge difference.

I'm under the impression the compression turns off at WOT.

Can anyone confirm?

it does turn off, just listen to the compressor and you can hear the clutch engage and disengage.
