I think that the crash pictures linked to above really illustrate just how solidly the S2000 is built. To me, the peace of mind that comes with knowing how safe our cars are is woth it.

I wasn't talking about the Boxster S

2005/2006 base boxster was 2855, same as 05/06/07 s2k
2007/2008 base boxster was 2877, base s2k went to 2864

mileage for manual base boxster in 07/08 was 20 city/29 hwy vs. 18/25 for the s2k.
Base Boxster? Yeah, 2008 base S2000 and 2008 base Boxster have similar power and weights (Boxster with 8 more hp, and 13 to 145 more pounds.) Similar sizes (Boxster is 9.4 inches longer, but the wheelbase is only 0.6 inches longer so much of that length difference is probably not the beefiest part of the frame.) And again, per EPA, for the 6spd models there's a 1 mpg combined difference between the two, making the Boxster all of $92 per year cheaper on fuel costs, assuming 15000 miles per year. So personally, I really don't think it's all that interesting of a question as to why two cars so similar weigh so similarly. Minor differences in power and size, with minor differences in weight.

Croc, great post. Though I think it is clear that the windshield frame of S2000 is much stronger than the Miatas. In most rollover accident pictures, s2000 frame is still intact, while the Miata frame is almost always collapsed. Makes a big difference in safety, just like the standard roll bar.

this is good to know

according to pictures on the WWW, 1st and 2nd generation miata's windshield collapses easily.
about 3rd - i didn'e even 1 pictures of it - probably because all Miatas are really hard to get rolled over........

when we try to answer this question we need to decide first what MX5 are you talking about?
3rd generation

Aluminim parts:
All miatas have aluminum hood and boot.
3rd generation has all suspension arms from casted aluminum - reall good stuff.
still less fun chasis though

The MX-5 is a newer design than the S.
I think a better question is why does a 2005-2008 Boxster weigh the same as the same model year S2000, but is larger, has a more powerful 6 cyl and gets better gas mileage?
That's something I actually thought about, too.
