history did Not deter me what-so-ever(5 previous). the condision the car was in spoke for the amount of care that went into maintaining it along the way. 106k and the driver seat has zero wear, paint looked new, carpet, everything....overall very very clean

Wow never realized how many S2000's have over 5 owners. Im currently the third owner of my 01 Ap1 and it currently has about 60k on it and its one of the best decisions i made car wise. Even though i don't daily the car i would never think about selling it. Guess people are really impulsive buyers and don't look into things before making purchases.

I think the idea of a s2k is great. however its very unpractical.

Its a drivers car not a luxery convertable. They are sexy and i can see peopme buying one as an impulse buy and realizing its not a very good fit or the cool factor wears off. I mean there are plent of drop tops that offer mild performance, rear seats(albeit tiny), more trunck space and are al around some that can be driven as a practicle daily with a little extra fun(think brostang)

Then you have the younger guys who buy one but soon enough they meetsomeone and start a family and a roadster wont bring the baby to a checkup.

imho the s2k is very much a side car, can it be dailied...yeah but it still isnt practicle for a majority of the population. Its best suited as a weekend warrior / fun car

After reading these replies it seems the "game" mostly consists of cars with 4-5+ owners.

I've owned my MY00 now for going on 5 years. Since it had 5 PO's when I bought it, I guess that probably means I'm the longest-running owner of my car. I pretty much bought my S sight-unseen other than pictures on Auto Trader. It was a ten year old car with 113k on the clock and 5 PO's, so I went into it expecting to have some issues needing to be resolved. I only paid $8.5k for it for those reasons, but it continues to surprise me as I've only had to do regular maintenance stuff, nothing major thus far.

I'll agree that I carry the same stigma against multiple-owner cars. I tend to think, "If this car is so good, then why did 5 people go through it in a span of 10 years." But I think we have to realize that not everyone thinks and ticks like us... Not everyone aspired to one day own an S and fall in love with it and never want to sell it. Some people just see it as a car. Maybe as an impulse buy that they regret one year later. Maybe they thought it would be a comfy vert cruiser and they just couldn't get used to the sporty ride quality. Maybe they bought it thinking they'd be single forever and two years later ended up with a wife and triplets.

But conversely, maybe they bought it to thrash about and after grinding second and over-revving and launching and not changing the oil, they decided they wanted an M3 instead. But hey, you're buying a used car mate. Its a risk when you play the game.

Yes. Collectible status has very little to do with how many have owned it. If the car is in tip-top condition and runs smoothly with a clean history, I doubt the number of owners is going to have a huge hit on the price you can sell it for unless you're having fever dreams of selling to for 100's of thousands on Barrett-Jackson. I'm not sure why most would even bother themselves with it. If the car is clean and straight and mechanically sound, what's there to worry about?

My only issue is that I find that short-term owners don't take care of the car. They figure they can beat on it a bit and then sell it, so the cars can need additional TLC.
That's what I'm saying. Luckily our motors can handle being driven hard. Our glass rear diffs on the other hand.
I plan to keep my cars somewhat long term, so a S2k that has underbody rust from salt wouldn't make my "to buy" list either.
"Glass rear diff" is a bit over the top. They're not something you can hammer all day with drag launches, but I wouldn't call them glass. Long vs short doesn't really matter, my car is a single owner car and he maintained it to a degree, but it's not something that I would call babied.

I guess it's because I do all my own work on the my cars, but as long as it's not messed up terribly (exterior) and mechanically sound, I don't care how many people have owned it. If there's any serious damage to worry about, it's pretty easy to find or will be very evident just by driving the car.
