Me, I'll let the market tell me what they're willing to pay, and be happy with that. As you and others have pointed out, there are better INVESTMENTS out there. I would say most people on here just like the car, and didn't buy it on spec. The people that are squawking now, are the people that missed the boat, and wish that they could go back and hop on.
This is truly the mic drop of the thread! I've never heard anybody lamenting the fact that their possession has increased in value! Anybody saying otherwise is posturing and lying to themselves, because when it does become time to sell...I guarantee they won't sell their $20,000 S2000 at $12,000 "for the good of humanity"! Everybody should afford houses, everybody should have an affordable sports car, except that's not how things work. Not a single person in this thread is selling their $250,000 house for $90,000 so that everybody can have a home, that's virtue signaling plane and simple!

But, like Silvio said, if you want to do that...you're free to do so, it's your property. None of you saying you would or that you will, when push comes to shove, and somebody had a full price offer for your property would actually sell it to the person that was offering thousands less. This thread very much sounds like sour grapes, but that's how these things tend to go.

S2000 is super tall and dorky in stock form too.

I must just be the only one who doesn’t think a stock S2000 is the peak of automotive engineering.
Perhaps you can explain yourself then if you care too. From where I'm sitting you're mad that your property has increased in value, which is wild, because it's not that good of a vehicle to begin with anyways. Do I have your position on the matter correct?

Oh, and yes dude, it's you, you're the only one....

lol this is a whole new level. Sounds like you and your S2000 are very close. Who's on top?

This is funny to me because the AE86 community is in the same weird price inflation and identity crisis right now. Beat-for-beat same arguments just at $10k less lol. We got:

- Back in my day, it was only X amount
- It's slow, get a Miata
- Hype vs objective worth
- Arguments on the definition of hype, objectivity, and subjectivity
- Collector "investors" driving up value
- I hate that my car is increasing in value

I wonder how the 240 community coped. We'll all make it, guys. Be strong for S2k.

240 prices are getting high enough that old BMW's seem like a good idea in comparison.

Matt Farah has talked about specific cars as being an "x-amount-of-dollars driving experience," as in,"the R33 GT-R is a $50,000 driving experience." That can be taken in a number of ways so you'd have to ask him what he meant. I presume this is his way of quantifying the subjective, intrinsic value of a car, independent from the market value. Or possibly what it would cost to buy or modify a different car to achieve a similar experience.

In that spirit, I think a stock S2000 is a $30,000 driving experience.

...what cars could compete? ... Mazda MX-5 creeps close .. but the Honda would eat it for lunch and not even bother to spit out the bones. In the end I can tell how much fun a car is by how it makes me drive. In the S2000, I’m a raging asshole. I want to hit 9000 RPM at every shift, every stop sign requires threshold braking and every corner is a power slide. Owning an S2000 would wreak havoc on my driving record, but that extra $20,000 will pay a lot of legal bills - advantage Honda” [Face-to-face comparison with Porsche Boxster S]

....
I agree with the spirit of your post here... but you bit hard on the troll bait.

Nah, Cody is not a troll. He believes what he believes whether or not you agree with it. I often do not but I do agree with him that the kool-aid here is strong. Car mags are meh and most of the opinions/quotes posted are 10+ years old when the S2k was still in production. Lots have changed since then but if we want to post things comparing a 200x s2k to a 200x Boxter, sure take the W. Since then, things have changed. In its time, the S2k was contemporarily great, objectively and subjectively. That legacy is worth celebrating, sure. Its values have made it so that it does not need to be compared to contemporaries but to cars that currently cost the same. In that regard, it is arguably competitive, 20 years after it was engineered. For that reason, it is truly still great, but not blindly so. Is it worth it when other cars that cost the same start to be objectively better... That is what I think is at stake here. Justifying that is appealing in subjective terms which the S2k does provide. Awesome that it does but understand it for what it is.

This is a good way to look at it and set expectations. The keyword being driving experience. Not luxury experience, not convenience experience. Not 5-star crash test ratings or top fuel efficiency. Not a feature-rich infotainment experience or passenger/luggage transport experience. It was designed solely to be an open-air sports car that was fun for the everyday enthusiast to own and drive. Everyday here meaning "not the high upkeep and rough edges of a race car" but with the performance of one to some extent in a track setting. It is essentially a toy race car brought to life that makes the boy-racer (or girl-racer) in everybody smile. I'm in my 30s and this car makes me feel 10 years younger with a grin ear to ear on my face every single time I drive it. It is the car equivalent of that rollercoaster that you ride over and over again, and still get off thinking "shall we go on again?" I have yet to find another car that sparks that same desire to drive and enjoy it.

Even in bone stock form, it has the perfect amount of power for its intended uses. Getting around town in the city, cruising in the highways and interstates, swiftly merging with traffic, and having fun at the track. Is it the fastest thing on four wheels? Absolutely not, not by todays standards nor then in its prime. But speed isn't everything, and many of us here have or still do own cars that are (much) faster than the S. But those same cars don't give us the same experience or fun factor that the S does. The CTR is a good example of that, boosted and more hp/tq. But driving it is not nearly as exciting and I'd say the handling still doesn't feel as confident and snappy as the S. Maybe it's the low height, the open top, or some other voodoo but you just don't feel the same connection to the car and road.

And that's why you're paying the price to own an S over something else. You can't quite put it into words why you love it, but you know deep down that you do. And every time you enjoy it, it's a reminder of that love.

The kool-aid is strong because honestly the car has proven itself both then and now. It's not surprising that a new car might surpass the S in some specs, come 10-20 years later. However, I would take pause in assuming that such an experience can be recreated similarly. Working with different emissions and safety standards, and business administration has led to the development of very different vehicles than decades ago.

I have gone the FR-S -> S2k -> CTR -> Model 3 Performance route myself. There were absolutely advantages of those cars over the S in many varying areas. The M3P is 0-60 in a blinding 2.9 seconds with instantaneous torque. It pulls you back in your seat so hard you basically get the "rollercoaster butterflies" feeling on land. It's surreal and exhilarating. I can absolutely walk most cars in a straight line, especially from a stop. It's effortless, but also a bit boring. All I do is mash pedal and go. Now don't get me wrong, I love the Tesla for many other reasons but I would not consider it a "fun" car to drive for someone who actually likes the art and engagement of driving.

As much as the S tried to be an everyday car, it really isn't ideal as an only car. The only reason I initially gave up my S was because it became less practical over time. In hindsight, I probably should have just bought a used 8th-gen Si sedan (FA5) as the everyday car and kept the S. Fortunately I was able to get another one recently, and despite paying a premium compared to a few years ago, I feel fine about it. Because I know this experience will not be replicated again, at least not in my enjoyment of it. No car will be this minimal in the future, this "unsafe" of a convertible (according to modern standards), or high-revving (emissions I suppose). Funny enough I was looking at the 2021 Civics and noticed a combined MPG of 29. Just filled up the S and got 26-ish with a ton of spirited driving. Funny.

For someone nostalgic like myself, it's like owning a time capsule. Every part of it represents the golden era of that time. From the exterior lines, interior, and how the motor winds up. It's like being back in the Honda + McLaren days over and over again, back when Fast & Furious and tuner car culture was at the peak. And the world was a lot less crappy. If you don't believe it, give up your S and see how quick you begin to miss it, I know I did despite owning other fun cars.

Meanwhile, coming to a future Ford vehicle near you... I'll keep my "dumb" Alpine headunit thank you.

In fairness, that was lifted from another site, it took me all of 10 seconds to copy and paste.
