definition for myself
rice = absoulte non-funtional/performance stuff...
HALO LED headlights,
ALTEZZA tailights,
underbody neon lights
20x 15" subwoofer in the trunk and another 10x 12" subwoofer behind and under your seat...
huge wings that is not even adjusted or installed correctly...
super oversized wheels + over weight...ex: 20" wheels on s2000...+15 offset @ 20" with -5 degree..to make it looks like a cartoon car
slammed your car to 1cm from the ground, totally non-functional, suspension doesn't even have enough room to rebound.
(my APR carbon mirrors...i call myself rice too) i think it looks nice, but again, its non-functional...well, it might save me 5lbs and some wind drag @100+ mph
5 color car with cracked body kits...
type R stickers on any hondas
AMG badge on lexus, BMW M stickers on Mazda...skyline GTR badge on nissans...

I hate any car that is riced out, I don't care what brand it is, it looks cheap and tacky and wal-martish.
I'm not even a fan of asian cars in general, the S is the only one I've ever liked, but it feels more like a mini exotic car to me. All my other cars were muscle cars.

The OP is not asking for a definition of what is "rice". My statement is a generality that is answering his question of "why".....
If you look at the S2000 in Japan, there are many companies that have built the car with the widebody kits and wings and have established themselves in the market. ASM/J's/Mugen/Spoon etc.
S owners that like to emulate those creations by spending their $$ to do so is their option.
"Rice" can not be defined on a forum with thousands of opinions of what it means. However the term comes from non proven aftermarket parts that are the cost effective solution to "look" like something from a high performance nature. If you are actually buying the parts that the aftermarket companies are copying, essentially if you had the money, you could build a track worthy monster.
Modding is for "show" and for "go". You can't convince the "go" people that flashy looks isn't rice. People mod to create something that is personalized. Even though you may have many S's with the same mods at a "Meet". On the street, the car will stand out as one of a kind.
Before the 1999-2000 when the S came out, Civics had already established themselves and the "rice" haven of front wheel drive cars. There are several generations of Civics from $500 - $28,000 that are modded. When someone trys to mod a 1980's Civic or even early 90's Civic with low end aftermarket parts, it's hard for the car to shake the "rice" badge.
The 2 flaws with modding are that "looks" are subjective. Not everyone will like your "Style". Modding is also an aquired "art" if you will. Most car enthusiast don't just step into the scene and build a clean car. They "learn" how to mod over years of experience and as they come up through years of ownership of different cars.
Demographics again for the Civic means younger owners who are learning the art...... as you get more experience, the $$ is more available and the modding becomes more cleaner. Still understanding that it's still subjective as to what looks good.
There are the anomolies such as the "rich" kid who ruins the look of a Ferrari or P-car.
Bottom line, it's your car, who cares if it's rice. Who cares if you track it. I'm just giving you an opinion as to why Civics get a harder rap than the S.

seriously! and it's not just on the s2ki forums, but some of these cars with body kits do look nice, after all some individuals have to have the JDM look! This isn't all that bad, on the www.3si.org (3000gt's and stealths) forums, it's a lot worse!
Rice comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. Some things just look more rice than others because the person has bad taste and did not think about the final outcome. If you put the puzzle together correctly chances ar it will look okay. To me rice is classified as a unpainted body kit, neon lights, stickers, crazy paint, huge dysfunctional body parts, Etc... I do think some of the kits out for the S are a little loud and ugly but people have different tastes. It gives us options and allows us as consumers to have choices. Just think if the S was only sold in the color, baby poop green with hot pink pin striping, not too many people would buy one, and if they did they probably would want options available to change it.
On a side note.
I would have to say, I think the worst kit ever made for the S has to be the Veilside Millennium kit. That kit is a few hundred shy of 2k and looks like ass. I think some people think rice has a price tag. News flash, Just because it is expansive does not change it from rice to nice, chances are, if it looks like shit, smells like shit, it's shit. On another note, I have see that kit on a few cars and you can tell when good craftsmanship is used, but honestly who really cares?
In the end, you can do what ever you want in life and even if it's what 90% of the people are doing, 10% will still talk crap and vise versa. So if you hate it, hate on, and if you like it, then good. If what your car looks like determines how you impact society and what you have to offer this world we all would be screwed. I doubt a wide body kit or a OEM lip will change to way the world operates.
"Humans.... Strange creatures we are".
